On a more geeky note, there is actually some scientific underpinning for your observation [propellor-hat on].
Anthropologists studied the tribal behaviour of monkeys ... they observed a typical hierarchical structure, with alphas (males and females) taking the best food, best nesting spots, and of course the most desirable mates. They also observed (no surprise) that middle- and lower-ranked males who were perfectly healthy and good looking but were not part of the alpha structure of their tribe, weren't "getting it" because the females were all trying to get themselves screwed by the alpha males. So, many of them would abandon the tribe they were born in and instead live on the outskirts of a neighbouring tribe. Why? Actually their life there is a lot harder ... they are even more ostracised by the elite than they were in their birth tribe ... getting food is harder, and they have even less political clout than they did "back home" ... but ... they were getting laid ALL the time ...
Basically the females, who were trying to get laid by the alphas, needed somewhere to vent their frustration when the alphas were off screwing another female ... so rather than pick a familiar but lower-ranking "home" male, they'd go off into the bushes and pick up a complete stranger. As a result the males who lived outside the social structure of the tribe got a LOT more sex than anyone except the most powerful political elite. Simply speaking, they were much more attractive to the ladies than the locals.
For those who were self-reliant, the upside of being an outsider far outweighed the downside of being on their own and having to fend for themselves.
If you look at it, the behaviour serves a valuable purpose in providing genetic diversity and mitigating the risk of in-breeding.
