Growing up in Hong Kong, I remember there was a big softcore porn industry with Category III films like "Sex and Zen" doing quite well, even going as far as to capitalize on the 3D craze in 2011 with "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy". Considering how prostitution is legal in Hong Kong (or at the very least decriminalized), why is there currently no real porn industry here? I remember reading that there was a law banning the production and distribution of hardcore porn but I could never understand why the government would be fine with one form of sex work and not the other, arguably tamer kind.
Given the rise of OnlyFans and ManyVids and the obvious global appeal of Asian women, how has Hong Kong not had some sort of resurgence of even softcore content? I'm not sure what the legality of porn is in the Mainland but I've definitely noticed an increase of content on PornHub from Mainland pornstars, though most seem to be on the amateur side of things. Is it purely a legal barrier or is there also something cultural or related to Hong Kong societal norms that has kept HK out of the porn industry since the disappearance of those Category III films?
Would love to hear your thoughts, and would love to know if there's an underground porn industry in HK that I've somehow missed. Given the general vibe of HK as of late, it'd be great to see more people exploring their kinks and sexuality and monetizing it. God knows our economy could use the boost!
