sorry for being dumb...but whats a proxy for and how do you use it?

I'm guessing its because China is gay, and has many sites blocked, but how does a proxy allow you to view the blocked sites?

technically, i have no idea what proxy server is...
i just know they let me surf 141 in china, as well as some other "blocked" sites, like forumer forums, some jap sites, etc..

u can try searching "在线代理" on cn.yahoo.com
it means proxy server in chinese.
will turn up more links..
