I think this depends. For example, as an extreme case to cement the point, in Japan, you will find most foreigners are denied. I think only about 10%, will be willing to serve foreigners there. Shower doesn't necessarily give off that "clean" image in some peoples'/culture's eyes.
This is only a personal opinion, but yea, being a gwailo in HK puts u in a disadvantage, not to the extent as Japan...etc, but still.
Depiction of "being rough", odor, personal grooming practices...etc in media/movies/literature are all probably factors.
But like others have said, the WG's do have a choice, much like you, to deny a WG when the door opens and your LB says no. Locals do get denied as well, but probably not as frequent. Just don't take it to heart.
