I would say that Hua Hin is pretty boring compared to Bangkok.  It's basically a semi sleepy beach city.  Some decent restaurants and a small red light district.  I would say for most people two to three nights would be sufficient. Would Agree with the above but also like to add maybe have the 2 to 3 days in Hua Hin then stop off via Cha-am at the weekend time which is when everyone thai from bangkok and other places converge on Cha-am for the weekend to let their hair down. Small red light area and bars in Cha-am but the beach is better than Hua Hin to many rocks and crap around Hua Hin. Some nice resors in and around both areas particularly the Springfield Group. Stayed at the golf resort outside Cha-am and price was good plenty free vouchers jaquzzi in most rooms on balcony had the swimming pool's virtually empty couple of people. Next time will try the one nearer the beach but it was undergoing some refurb. Id say a week for both Cha-am and Hua Hin would be ok.
