why is it called mongering?

Hello bros,

Why do we call it mongering, what we do? I had never heard the word used in that way before i arrived in HK, Is it a local phrase, or an American one that I have not heard in Europe? Could it be because of Mong Kok?

Thanks

I know those meanings, but I really don't see the link with us. We don't trade, we just buy. and we don't promote war, fear or scandals, just do walks up quietely.

A monger was originally someone who dealt in a physical ware like iron, but has come to denote someone who traffics in some undesirable commodity, such as warmonger, scandalmonger, or whoremonger - tho we tute fanatics use the term in a self-ironic way. It's quite common in the USofA, and I would assume in all other English-speaking countries as well. Talking about whoremonger here - monger used as a substitute for whoremonger is probably specific to our sort of sex forum.

the word mongering is linked to FISHMONGER....a person who sell fish. And Fish is also the substitute for ladies/girls.  In another word, fishmonger = Pimp.

So PUNTER like us is therefore known as MONGERER and the act of seeking sex service from the WGs via the pimp is call MONGERING.

That may be true in some language or other, but it's not an English usage I've ever heard.

In the Victorian era, a whore monger was a pimp. Someone could be charged with "whoremongery" for offering the services of prostitutes to punters like us .

I think it derives from Whoremonger - though I guess gwailoplayer is right this word probaly more correctkly discribes a pimp - not the John. But it seems to apply to the clinets in the context we use it here.  I can't think of a better word.  I think it is used as both a noun and a verb.

The word Monger derives its root from Latin mangō, dealer in slaves.  In English it can be used as a noun or a verb.

noun - a person who is involved with something in a petty or contemptible way (usually used in combination): a gossipmonger, warmonger etc.
or a Chiefly British context -  a dealer in or trader of a commodity (usually used in combination): sexmonger.

verb - (used with object)  to sell or hawk.

So taking the British context mongering is trading a commodity (sex for money)

I was told that anyone who visited prostitutes was called a whoremonger. Over time it was shortened to monger........... hence mongering.

But, seeing the posts above, there are different versions of the term - so I guess you take your pick.
