seriously, the very fact you're asking here instead of searching MedMD or somewhere serious says what you really want is for someone to tell you "nope, it's all a hoax, you're quite safe really".

The risks are real, and pretty serious.  Of the many and varied bugs that make their living inside human genitals Herpes is incurable, and much more common than HIV.  Many others, many of them are indeed curable with antibiotics, but none are desirable.  Take your pick.   

But here's my version of "go ahead" if you want it:- there are 850 girls in this database.  The only way they could possibly be here - especially the long term ones - is if they make an above-average income.  The only way they can make enough to justify the risks and the hassles is by servicing several guys a day - I'm guessing in the range 4 to 10 per day, on average.  This would make around 5,000 acts of commercial sex per day just through this db alone - say 150,000 per month.  If it was THAT easy to catch stuff, you'd be hearing about it a lot more and the whole industry would be shut down quickly.  

Like I say, that's my version of the cop-out.  

Lots of places on the web that talk about safe sex ... and all of them are more objective!  ... heck even adult dating sites these days dish out advice on safety.

I think a permanant thread on safe sex would be a great idea.

My only concern though is to make sure the information is correct and filter out all the myths and crap.  You would not want to have a safe sex thread "approving" of a particular sexual practice and then someone contracts a nasty.  It would defeat the purpose.

Maybe we call it the "UNsafe sex" thread instead ...

It's not so much to approve practices as to get all the opinions in one place.  Does anyone actually know what is safe and unsafe (the obvious excepted of course!)?  Even the docs only know after someone contracts a nasty ... the best way we can look out for each other is by making communicating news and facts faster.  

Anyway I think the silent majority would appreciate it, just as the other threads are useful (141 primer, macau, sauna, etc).  Might cut down on the number of repeat questions!

In fact, there is no absolutely safe sexual behavior, or any behavior for that matter. 'Safe' and 'unsafe' can never be anything but estimations of the likelihood of something going wrong.  Therefore, the fact that someone, somewhere has caught something nasty is not, in itself, useful. A couple of days ago, several people sitting at a table outside the International Finance Center here in HK were hurt when a window-cleaner and his gondola fell thru the glass canopy above them, but no-one would say sitting in such places is unsafe, tho it clearly was in that one instance. All behavior is risky to some extent. It's up to the each of us to weigh the real risks against the rewards.

The problem with the news media is that it's the horror stories that catch our attention. The fact that billions of kids safely play outdoors each day doesn't make good press; but when one kid is kidnapped in Spain or the UK, it becomes news and everyone thinks children everywhere are in danger. You've got gun-nuts in the States who insist on keeping weapons at home to protect their families, even tho the chances of a child being accidentally killed by such a weapon are a thousand times greater than him being plucked of the street by a pedophile.

There will always be someone who catches something horrible through sex, just as there will always be someone horribly maimed in car accidents or just walking down the street. Shit happens, you take reasonable precautions, and hope that you're not one of the unlucky bastards.

Mars, I do agree with you overall, but just want to focus on "there is no absolutely safe sexual behavior".  Really?  

It's intriguing that having NO sex is itself an unsafe behavior ... you get reduced immune system / increased risk of prostate cancer ... not to mention that it's suicide for your genetic heritage ...

But since we're talking about health risks here I can't see any in marrying a virgin and only ever having sex with her.  Is there one?   OK I can see lots of other risks,   but that's beside the point!  

I see it as a question of awareness.  Taking your example of the guys outside IFC, it's possible that if they'd been more aware they might have noticed something and moved away for example.  For example any time I've talked with ex-military guys (marines, SAS) I've always noticed that they're far more aware of their surroundings than I am.  They weren't born that way, they learned it.  

Similarly, aside from making a straightforward risk/reward analysis and then going for it like in a casino, a better way is to be aware of the risks and handle them.  

Actually, that's a lot more fun too!!
