No, but I clicked the link. I am an ABC.
Ten years ago I would have raised a glass celebrating the author's sense of entitlement.
Now, as an older man, I can't help feel mild derision and contempt for
his writing, as well as for my younger, uncouth self.
To be sure, it is an eye-opening, intoxicating experience to be in Hong Kong as an Asian male
educated and paid according to Western standards.
Over time, you realize you're fishing in a stocked pond. There's a reason why Asian males are
viewed as asexual beings in the West. We're afraid of playing in the big leagues. We're happy
to subsist in an Asian city that gained prominence mainly because of its British colonization, and
as expats we continue to piggyback off the Western sheen of prosperity through our language and
custom.
I'm not saying it's a poor career path for an ethnic Asian to pursue a career in HK after graduating. I'm just saying it's smallball thinking to celebrate something as pedestrian as being raised in
the West.
