Tailors

I am going to the UK for a wedding and stopping in HKG for a few days.
Instead of dusting off the old suit I might get a tailor made one on route.
I am not a suit wearer these days and dont need to impress  so I am not looking at the top end of town but more seeking a good well priced product.
Manufacture will need to be pretty quick so any suggestions?
I know there are a lot of Indian or similar tailors along Nathan Rd  TST, they drove me around the bend trying to get me in.
Some of them are probably ok but I am not a fashion guru and dont know the difference between the stitching in a chaff bag compared to an overlocker..lol

Any suggestions guys?

Depends on your budget

Honestly a good off-the-peg suit is better than a cheap tailor-made one.  Especially if you go to a good shop for the off-the-peg and negotiate adjustments.

IMHO the tipping point is around HK$7k ... much below that I've been disappointed with the fabric the cut the workmanship and the wearing ... i.e. just about everything.

If you're shopping above that you probably want to avoid Kowloon unless you've got a good guide - and I'm not one - you can find good tailors in the top floor (shopping area) of Prince's building, ranging from around $7k to $70k+.

195cm tall...you are out of luck as there are no Big and Tall shops here in HK. For off-the-peg suits, it is hard to find suits larger than size 54 (44 in chest) and if there any, they are for stocky asians which means the sleeves and the body of the jacket won't be long enough for you. The slacks may be long enough to cover your legs but most likely there won't be enough material to make cuffs.

The best bet would be for you to go for a tailor suit. For a properly made tailored suit, you will need to give the tailor at least a week to construct one because of the 3 fittings. 1st fitting to measure you, 2nd fitting to confirm the shape of jacket and any adjustments in the middle of construction, and finally 3rd fitting to try on the completed suit. I don't have a tailor to recommend because I think mine retired long ago. If you want reassurance, you can try the ones in Prince Bldg in Central or in the many 5 star hotel lobbies. Those guys on the street are a hit-and-miss and especially so if you are a tourist.

If you don't have enough time, there is a way to save time on the 1st fitting. Since you are coming to HK for a wedding, you must know someone here in HK. Ask your friend to find a tailor for you, then you find someone to measure you in Australia, then send those measurements to the tailor in HK. You will have to trust your friend to pick a good style, color, patterns,  and fabric for you.  When you arrive in HK, half of the suit would have been completed, saving you some days.

I am actually going to the UK for the wedding..too many k l=llaces..haha.

Well with your guide re the place in central etc I might use google and send a message to a few of these guys and see what their response is. Cheers. good job.

Or I could turn up with a short armed, short legged suit for laughs...In fact I have always wanted a pin striped suit with the stripes going crossways instead of up and down..

Bonham Strand co-founder Jong Lee hopes the workshop will revitalise the industry. Photo: May Tse
The workroom on the sixth floor of an industrial building in Lai Chi Kok is a stark contrast to the cramped cubbyholes that elderly artisans once toiled in. A bright and airy space, it is filled with racks of unfinished jackets and tailors gathered at worktables, busily ironing sleeves, cutting fabric or stitching seams.

"Clients want to see the workshop because they want to meet the tailor who is making their suit," says Bonham Strand chairman Jong Lee Jong-chul.

We want the lion's share of the money to go to the people who make the suit JONG LEE, BONHAM STRAND
This is the heart of a social enterprise that aims to revitalise Hong Kong's waning tailoring industry while helping young former addicts learn some practical skills to help them get back on their feet.

Specialising in bespoke menswear, the venture has had its ups and downs since opening in May last year. Lee and co-founder Brian Ng didn't know much about the tailoring business. But they are happy to report that it is now finally coming together.

Lee, a 45-year-old Korean-American, came to Hong Kong five years ago to work in private equity. Two reports in the South China Morning Post within days of each other - one about how drug addiction was on the rise in the city, the other about the decline of the tailoring business - gave him the idea.

"Our theory is to try to make this a social enterprise, taking a discarded industry and discarded people [former drug addicts] and make an omelette, kind of like jujitsu capitalism," says Lee. "When your opponent has you down, how do you get back up on your feet?"

With his background in venture capital, Lee framed it in terms of acquiring distressed assets at low prices; tailoring fit the bill, although he was not buying but building a business in a distressed sector.

After a year of research on the market size and competitive landscape, Lee and Ng began to target masters, or sifu, working in places where tailors' shops were clustered, such as Mirador Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui, pitching their workshop idea.

"They thought we were crazy," says Lee.

"The Mirador Mansion tailors usually get paid by the piece and they have to supply the material themselves. They make HK$6,000 to HK$9,000 a month and have to supplement their income working as security guards," Lee says. "But here we have a workshop setting where they would get a base salary and open-ended compensation that could double their income to HK$16,000 to HK$19,000, while receiving monthly bonuses and a lunch allowance."
