I don't think it was even a normal one...

It was a super typhoon as it passed between Taiwan and Philippines, but weakened to a severe typhoon by the time it reached HK.

Also, this typhoon passed by from the north of HK which is much more sheltered than if it took its more normal path to the south and hence much of the wind was not felt in the city.

Although I think it was one of the closest to skirt by HK in a while.

The only damage it did in SZ was destroy my umbrella!

Typical of typhoons that hit hk. That's why nobody (except the boatpeople) takes them seriously.  One of the scariest weather systems I experienced was January's excyclone Oswald - the wind was whistling for six plus hours. We have a sail connected to the roof of the house, which serves as a carport. Very scary watching the sail shake violently and the walls tremble thinking the roof would fly off with the sail. They called it an excyclone but there were uprooted trees everywhere and serious flooding.

I'm planning on visiting Subic in PI, and was looking at another site - street behind the hotels completely washed out - Treasure Island folks, they have to walk down the beach to get supplies.  Six truckloads of fill brought in today - they think that they can get the road opened in the next day or two.

But looking at the pics posted - you can't see the sand on the beach for the debris.  I still think I'll go though -- it's not about the beach and it's still three weeks away...

This happy ending was almost ORGASMIC.

What always makes me laugh is the Chinese "anic Buying" water & food as if they are never leaving the house for months!

I left work around 2pm as it closed and headed home, we were obviously spending the night at home as I had family staying. I went to two stores and they were full of Chinese buying water & food like they were locking up for weeks

If you understood their mentality, and why, you wouldn't laugh so much.

The Chinese mentality is to plan for the future, and in the case of typhoons etc, you just don't know what might happen.  

It's foolish to laugh at people for thinking ahead.

Historically, the Chinese people have experienced disasters (man made or natural) that makes this kind of behavior rational.

The Japanese invasion of WW2, the countless typhoons and earthquakes, civil wars, hyperinflation, etc.  A lot of these were not too long ago, and many of the people that survived these situations are either still alive, or their children are, and they remember.

You buy what you can, when you can, because you never know when these options will be unavailable to you.

Not everybody grew up in a neighborhood where there are few natural disasters and water can be drunk from your kitchen tap.

My father and mother do this all the time, and there is literally a year's supply of water, juice, toilet paper, and canned food in the basement.

I don't follow their behavior, but I'm sure I spend a lot more than they do for the same goods because i have the "stupid" mentality of buying only for the moment.  Sometimes, parents know best.

I just watch the news and I hope you people in HK are safe.
