Do you mean you need the whole phone or just a prepaid SIM card?

If just a SIM card, buy one at 7-11 in the middle of the airport's arrival hall, between arrival gate A and B. HK$60 for the SIM card, unlimited data $38 a month, the rest of the balance is for your calls/texts.

Otherwise try this market in Ap Liu street: http://goo.gl/maps/Uqc2X
You can buy a cheap used phone/smartphone, and/or a SIM card at half the price (e.g. pay $25, get a SIM card with $50 balance).

There's also plenty of WGs available within 3 minutes walk from that market.

HK mobile market quite competitive so you have too much choice in sim cards

How long you staying for ? Only HK or china too ( not sure if worth while get 1 sim 2/3 numbers package.... Then data for those 2/3 too.... )

Else if just HK , yeah russex's info is good, HK is very well served by wifi , most shopping malls , Mac D , all MTR station, , strangely I'm finding the iPhone still register GPS even without 3G signal , so if you preloaded your map area into cache , still usable

Walkup are pink light , in old builings, sometime mixed into residential buildings, 1 WG per door, lots of ring door bells. I'd say about 60-70% accurate of girl from DB is there and not some old ads / BS

Hotel "walk" or HG are hotel girls usually very hot , model types , and yes , you call , make appointment , go to hotel , reaffirm your arrival , then mms will tell you which floor / rm number , you knock , hopefully not BS, if you happy they happy > you very happy !

There are other 'call up' 400-600 , and done in residential buildings , not sure how these are classified. But similar drill as HG , just not as model like , service still depends on your charisma , regardless WG,HG,... Streetwalker

Agree, there is plenty of free wifi around. Still sometimes you want to have 3G reception for Google maps or WeChat...

Just go to any 7/11 or Circle K. These shops are basically all around. Usually they will give you a choice of the following pre-paid sims:

- Three
- SmartTone
- PCCW
- China Mobile
- One2Free

I suggest not getting China Mobile as it is only 2G (for prepaid) as far as I know. On the other ones have a look at the data caps. I think they are quite similar and you have to decide which one suits your needs best.

- One2Free has a 30 Day Pass for HKD 258. A day is at HKD 28, a week at HKD78.
- Three is at HKD 348 but has recharge bonuses and a daily cap at 28 HKD.
- PCCW is at HKD 188 for 30days but only 4GB and with 20KB blocks. Plus unlimited Wifi which is a real plus!
- SmartTone: 24HKD for 24h

I found SmartTone having the best network, second likely Three. If you plan to go to China you might want to check out ChinaMobile as thez have free roaming for certain add-ons.

HTH.

wow, that is far different to here in Australia.
ID including passport or driver's licence, a credit card  and a heap of paperwork. The esn of the phone is registered in some way so that everything is traceable .
Even if you want to use a prepad sim there is an online validation process which included the above info. It makes it very difficult to have a spare sim on the side..

if you just buy a cell phone without being on a service plan then no, you don't need ID
if you get a sim card on a monthly plan then yes, you need ID plus proof of local address
pre paid sim no, not yet ... but they are talking about need of ID in the near future

For those who need a SIM card and want to save some money, there are a few shops in Sham Shui Po (SSP) that sell them cheaper than 7-11, Circle K or the mobile provider stores. These shops can be found near Ap Liu Street. There are at least 4 or 5 of them sim card stands on Kweilin Street (and Yu Chau Street). Get out at MTR Exit C2 and walk straight down the middle of the road (as if you're a car) and you will see them on either sides. I have never actually communicated with them in English, I'm sure some do speak it. There are many types of sim cards, tell them your data and other requirements (probably want credit for mins as you may be calling agents and such) and they will help you.

Plus you can check out the cheap scene in SSP.

I was about to post. I was near the Golden Computer Arcade and walked around where the street market was. Some vendors had the prepaid packages. The retail was around 80 and they were selling them for like 20. Are they legit?

If you're looking for pure convenience, you can buy a prepaid sim from CSL right when you land at the airport.  I believe its $148 HKD for 7 days and 5GB of data.  I have been using the same card for a couple years now and it doesn't expire as long as you reload it every 6 months.
