I'm primarily addressing the bros with SOs. God forbid, do you actually answer it while you're in the room??? I have a fairly bad track record of hearing the phone any time I'm out walking around, so I keep it on and call back later once i "notice" i missed a call. But I can't help wondering if there isn't a better solution, or at least if i should vary my approach somewhat.

#2 Post at 14-11-2012 03:08  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Reply #1 Buford's post Ahhh..., this is part of training the SO.  Do NOT jump everytime she calls.  You are busy.  You are working, in a meeting, on the phone, with a client, with your boss, whatever.  Train her that your schedule and calender is variable, and that she doesnt need to know the minute-by-minute details. I have taken this approach to the limit:  even booking fake business--trips when I wanted to pull an overnighter.  Just make sure your "variableness" fits within the norms she is used to.  So if you jump to answer her call, or always call back within minutes, then you are setting expectations that are unacceptably high and impossibe to maintain for us active mongerers. PS:  I NEVER call back or answer when a gal is in the room.  She doesnt need to hear my conversation with my SO, and my SO sure doesnt need to hear an accidental squeek or laugh from a WG!  Too risky.. #3 Post at 14-11-2012 10:30  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Only turn off if you regularly turn off, as you have limited times to use this excuse.  Also when you turn off the calls usually goes directly to voice mail.  Like the practice of not always answering and using excuse you did not hear or see the call.

Sometimes I dont call back or send 30mn later a message saying im still busy and I'll call her back. Not raising expectations is the most important!

It may take months or years for her to buy it.. you can't just all of a sudden go from picking up her call after the 1st ring to not replying her calls until 3 hours later... You really need to work on it to into your habit..

#8 Post at 15-11-2012 13:55  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L I got my pocket picked about a month back, cost me about 250rmb+, since then I have gotten into the habit of leaving my quite expensive iphone at home (unless I know I am going to be needing it) and just carry my much cheaper itouch for music, podcasts, translation app, etc. If you have wifi, it's also good for email and messages, but no voice, no loud and persistant phone calls. Sometimes less is more.

#10 Post at 24-11-2012 12:45  Profile P.M.  Font size: S M L Agree with most of the comments here the trick is setting in your SO's mind the default, whatever it is, i.e. not getting home until 9.30 every evening, not picking up the phone on the first ring, Certain times of day not even answering the phone. In my case I do a lot of business with folks in the UK and so basically from 5 PM to 10 PM "I am not contactable by telephone Because I am too busy talking on the phone to clients" is the message she has been trained on. Put the phone on mute, check your missed calls after, then drain the battery if necessary. Perfect excuse. If it doesn't exist, someone should invent it.

I guess it's the expectation you set between you and SO. If it's during the work day easy to say you could not take the call.
