Living in HK

Good or bad? , as said I lived here as a teenager but that felt different I've come here and its felt very different very liberal very free and I feel great perhaps on account of all the WG I've been patronising currently.

But tell me about the reality of coming out here and working, alot of people tell me its good to be a boss here bad to be an employee I'm sat here in a net cafe looking through 20-40000 HKD a month jobs which pay more than I get in the UK (esp considering the low tax rate and no VAT) low cost of living and very low rent free living here also (I can live in my Dad's Tai Po flat effectively for free but I look after all the bills and swap money in the UK to him as rent.

So what are your experiences? , I know I am on holiday and nodoubt living and working here (if only for a year or two) will feel different but I dunno on paper it all seems to make sense , other than I leave my mates behind which of 2 years in the UK in my current ok job I seem to have build up quite a few.

Your thoughts please (note I have citizenship here).

No point asking as every has their own reasons for staying or not. All I can say is, give it a try seeing as you have the opportunity, otherwise you'll never know! If you do stay here, I reckon you'll spend all your earnings on WGs.

Or, even worse, end up marrying one. Or even worse again - become a pimp.

Hong Kong is indeed a great place.  But the worst thing about Hong Kong is working life.  Compared to the U.S. (where I live), your average comparable job in Hong Kong pays lower, involves higher stress and more bullshit in the workplace.

If you don't heed my warning, make sure you go with good Cantonese skills and a decent university degree (preferably a master's degree).  Although some companies in HK uses English-only in the workplace, without Chinese, you will be excluded from a lot of opportunities.

Work life in HK is miserable.  You must either be employed high on the corporate ladder or you're an entrepreneur (the boss, as you put it).

i don't agree. in HK people work hard and they play hard; and there are plenty of opportunities to make good money (and of course the tax regime helps also)

Only problem HK has, so far as I can see, is the pollution which is not getting any better - so don't come if you are an asthmatic
