This happened about a year ago. But it's worth sharing it here.

One night, after work, my colleague was walking down from his office to his home in Wan Chai. He was listening to music through his earphones. Like everyday, he crosses the Wan Chai walkover (the one above the MTR). On that day, a person, standing on the walkover, dropped some dirty thing on his shoulder. Then a middle eastern guy approached my colleague and told him that there's something on his shirt and he will clean it up. So, my colleague took off his laptop bag from his shoulder and kept it down. The middle eastern guy turned my colleague the other side in order to clean it up and by the time he turned back, his laptop bag was gone. Then he almost grabbed the middle eastern guy but somehow even he escaped in the crowd.

That night itself he filed a police report. But nothing yet.

your work colleague ? didn't you tell us you were in school and still in school ? ... Look, I'm seriously not trying to ride your back but it seems almost everytime you tell us something 1 + 1 doesn't = 2 !!!

I mean my dad's work colleague. I know him as a friend.

I think your dad is shitting you because:
1) He dont want you to hang out in Wan Chai with the WGs, since you are too young. He thinks you need to save your virginity with your future wife.
2) Your dad hangs out in Wan Chai regularly, he doesnt want to bump into you with his favourite makati's indo gal.

You make it sound like this is only in Wan Chai. Scams like this happen everywhere & if this happens to people with common sense you would know something is up straight away.

I do know that shit like this happens all the time with everyone and it's not a biggie. The subject of this thread might have misinterpreted things.

All I'm trying to convey here is what and how exactly it happened so that any type of this similar thing doesn't happen with any bros here.

Well... I won't get into the fake or not but if people are reading, then it's nonetheless a good reminder to be careful.

I lived in Paris for 18 months and allow me to share 2 experiences of mine.

I was with my wife, boarding a train (metro) and it wasn't rush hour. Granted we are Singaporeans and we do stick out as a tourist in Paris (n all of Europe). As I stepped into the cabin, an old man (50s) bent down and grabbed my left leg. I was startled and looked down. He appeared to be picking up a metro ticket just next to my foot (as if I stepped on it). I bent over also, trying to pry his hand out of my lower leg. What set me off was he had already picked up the ticket and yet didn't let me go. At this point, I instinctively brushed my back pocket with my free arm and my wallet was missing! I immediately stood up, turned around and saw another man just outside the train with my wallet. I grabbed his hand and shouted for him to release the wallet. He struggled but I managed to get the wallet back. At this time, the old man in the train tried to grab me. I turned around and grabbed him by the collar. Meanwhile, my wife panicked and kept screaming. Passengers all around us were just stunned and none gave a hand. Somehow the driver of the train also knew coz the doors didn't close and it stopped longer than usual. I kind of lifted the old man, turned to the door and shafted him out of the train. Both of them had the nerve to give me the bird and we exchanged some 'greetings'! Didn't figure that it was worth chasing after them and soon after the doors closed and I pacified the wife.

Second one was more sinister, and I was mugged. Paris metros are notoriously wheelchair/pram/handicap unfriendly. I saw this lady with a pram and she was struggling down a flight of stairs, trying to carry the pram down. Being a dad with a young kid, I went over to help her. As I did this, and we were mid way down a LONG flight of stairs, a young man walked towards me, shafted his hand into my pocket and took my wallet. He didn't even try to bump me, just plain took it. I couldn't put down the pram, and i was also shocked that it happened. We quickly proceeded down the stairs, placed the pram down before running up to try to locate him. Needless to say, he was gone. I went to make a police report and the police told me that the lady with the pram was in on it. These were some tactics frequently used in Paris. C'est la vie!

Hence forth, I kept my wallet in my front pocket, minimal cash and only a couple of cards. It's also sad because the crime there has made Parisians less helpful and suspicious (my observation and friends told me that). Just see the number of security guards, even small neighborhood convenience stores hire security guards. Don't even get me started on dealing with these guys!  
I think the TS had a good intention of warning us about some of the ways thieves strike. It's safe in many places but as the Singapore police ads frequently says, Low crime doesn't mean No crime.

Be careful out there.

Scams like this everywhere, funny enough it happened to me in Paris around 6 years ago when I took my then GF for a long weekend.

Some guy stopped my GF asking for directions, dozy as my GF is/was (as he was French) she was giving him directions. I was inside a store buying some food for hotel room.

I notice & just figure this guy is chatting her up whilst I am in the store. Then another guy comes behing her & I rush out the store, he is about to unzip our bag on her back. I grab him from behind and slam him into a wall. The other guy just bolts it & my then GF is wondering what the hell is going on!!

The store owner calls the Police & we have to hang around in the freezing cold waiting for them.

I dont know about you but I grew up in environment unlike HK. people get robbed everyday.
I got hussle and jumped a few times when I was kid, with muscles and knife by bullies. Probably i was small and pale looking.
Confronted pick pockets every now and then in China, especially in shenzhen and guangzhou. Me and my SO Lost 2 phones in shenzhen past few years. Got into few fights, yelling and chasing down the thiefs.

HK is so safe.
Probably why you think your Wan Chai story does make a big headline in a city like HK.


But then, thanks for the warning and especially to those carrying lappie to Wanchai trying to pick up WGs, be careful of middle eastern blokes and if shit splashes on your shirt, run and dont stop or talk to anybody. You might be the next victim.

Exactly.. my friend also thought the same thing about Hong Kong. He is from India and robbery, murder, rape, etc. are very common there.

When he came to hong kong, he thought it was like the safest place that he has ever been to. (It is one of the safest place in my opinion).

Whenever I'm in india and read the newspapers and watch news channels, there will always be some murder, rape, etc. story going on. But in Hong Kong, that's not the case.

I lived in the NYC in the 80s, bad times those days. Everyone had to keep an emergency  USD$20 bill in their wallet. There were many cases whereby the mugger would shoot the victim if the victim did not have any money to give to the mugger. So that $20 bill was there to buy your life.

Besides the muggers were the rampant pickpockets. I learned to keep my wallet in my front pocket. Many guys don't like to keep the wallet in their front pockets because they tell me it is uncomfortable as there is only so much space in the front of the pants for a wallet and their big dicks. Well I trained myself and it only became a discomfort when standing next to hot, nubile girls.

maybe a simple solution is to keep paper cash in your underware and ask the muggers to reach in for the goodies !

I'm from India. That's why I know so much stuff about it. I could be safer and a much better country but the only problem is that all the politicians are corrupted and selfish.

my young innocent friend ... all politicians and goverment officials are corrupt in every country ! the only difference is how well they're able to hide it !

In UK early 90's where we lived, it was not as dangerous as NYC but you got the shit kicked out of you if you had no change to give local druggies!

We used to keep the big notes in our socks and extra change in one pocket

In India, it's completely different when you compare it to other developed countries.

For example, let's take UK or USA. If you know that someone is corrupt and have proof, the court will take some action or the other against him/her.
But in India, all the Indians know that who all are corrupted. We all know that which all politicians have loads of black money taken from taxes and deposited in their swiss account. But still, no one does anything. They are untouchable. It's like corruption is out in the open. It is taken to an all new next level.

For instance (talking on a small level), if you wanna make a your driving license and don't wanna go through all those shitty test and procedures, just bribe some agent with Rs. 1000 (around US$ 20) and after few days, the licence gets delivered to your place. Everyone in India knows about this. But no one does anything. But this is kind of good for rich people like us who can afford to bribe.
