I'm also just plain curious about something which I definitely want to make sure is NOT going to be construed as being bigotry or anything like it.  So please bear with me....!

Anyway, I've heard it said that South Asians water-washes themselves after taking a dump using their LEFT hand - simple reason being that traditionally, they eat bare-handed, using their RIGHT hand.

Anyway, what I'm curious about/been wanting to ask FOREVER but have not had such a chance IRL (I mean, how do you talk about this in polite society!!) are as follows:
(and I really would appreciate it if someone who DO know, could DEFINITIVELY respond)

a. Is all that I write above correct?

b. That if what I write is correct, would South Asian families be MORE INCLINED to make sure that their progeny are Right handed/force them to be Right-handed even if they were born otherwise.

c. In fact, you left handed guys - do you sometimes wish that you were NOT left-handed?  I mean, the world IS designed mostly for right Handed people - and thus I'm thinking that you Lefties must be much more "inconvenienced" vs us Right handed guys - no?

Errr.... sorry if this post IS a bit out of line, even offensive to some of you more refined....but like I said.... I've been wondering for the loooongest time!!  So....my thanks for indulging me.

yes, from what i know, in rural parts of SE Asia, the left hand is the hand used for dirty work (not just arsewiping by the way, but any dirty work) and the right hand is for eating and shaking hands/touching others.

it is fair to say that in this part of the world, many children are trained to switch to RH when their parents discover they might be naturally LH. i know 2 friends here (both HK chinese) where that has been the case. the whole conformity thing...

India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are still very much class-based societies.  And it's usually just the lower classes, mainly due to lack of resources (educational, financial, health, etc.), that use their left hand to wipe and wash after a good poop.  The upper classes, the ones with Western educations, that can speak English and live in home with modern plumbing, are the same as any well to do American, Canadian, Brit, Asian, Australian or European.  To be honest, it's not really a big deal.  It's a cultural difference and they do wash their hands afterwards.  The rest of us use a thin sheet of paper and many Indians laugh at us for that.

I dated an East Indian girl who was left handed and as a child her dad would beat her to try to get her to become left handed.  It never worked, but older generations of Asians -- South and East -- did try to emphasize being right handed.

Before I saw your reply I never thought twice about this but now I have a certain amount of trepidation about shaking anyones hand. Especially as as of yet there is no global law making south paws have a big L tattoed on their forehead.

In East Asian cultures, there are some practical reasons to make lefties into righties...left-handed chopstick eaters get shunted to the end of the rectangular tables or placed next to a empty seat on the roundtable because their lefthandedness gets in the way of the majority who are right-handers.

On other matters...whacking off with alternative hands give different feelings. Why limit oneself to using just only one hand when if one switches, one can get a different feel because of the natural curvature to the penis.

nope - but they would need to scrub their hands and nails especially followed by disinfecting with alcohol or similar to eliminate faecal matter, the source of most of the nasty diseases in the world, to be considered clean. However, I would say 99.9999999% of the proponents of this kind of arse cleaning system would not do this. Therefore they leave a trail of impossible to see specs of shit everywhere they go there after. Understand the poor doing this but anyone with more than 10 bucks in their pocket has no excuse for this.

- I can undue a bra with either hand in under a second.  Simultaneously (if two gals are present).  
- I usually pay with my right hand.  Though will switch to the left if my right hand is occupied (still handcuffed, etc.).
- I typiicallly defend myself from violent blows from scorned women via my left hand.

As far as I know...and....errr... observed from the provision of such ... the higher class SE Asians would use BOTH Toilet paper as well as/then followed by a thorough cleansing with water.

And actually I'd think that this is a much more hygienic practice than just paper alone - no?

In fact, I do believe that those Hi-Tech Japanese toilets always have provision for water to be used when cleaning oneself after.... and IMHO, the Japanese are one of the most hygienic race in the world.

Too true - At home I have the Hose Pipe thing by the toilet and I love it; give your arse a good spraying to clear the detritus and then dry with paper, but the hand never touches the shit!

In Fashion Mall in BKK a Japanese company has popped in the awesome toilet seats there that warm the seat, spray waters and soap with nozels you can direct, and then blow dries as well. Bloody awesome. First time I came across this was in Shanghai at the Niko Hotel and I had a BJ on the toilet from a girl from Da Tong Mill with the water shooting up my butt. I'm all class matey!

In Rural thailand you have no choice, no paper and usually a bucket of water with a small bowl. The whole experience paralyses me with fear. Always have a bag with loo role and alcohol wipes with me and as they are the crouch and pray types, I take my shoes and socks off outside the toilet, then put shoes back on. Take off pants and trousers (put pants in pocket of trousers with the socks), hang the trousers around my neck and get shitting. Touching the bowl thing is scarey because you know it is covered in years of shit. But when the but is ready to spray, you have no choice.

Talking about these new fangled Hi-tech toilets....a few years ago at a KTV in Taipei...where I polished off quite a bit of Black Label, had to go take a pee.

Walked into a stall and touched a button or another and what happened then was that the Plastic cover lining on the toilet seat started revolving; the more I touched the button, the more the stupid thing revolved...and in my drunken state, I just got all dizzy looking at this ...and promptly started to throw up....and continued throwing up as that stupid thing went round and round and round...

Lefty here, I can confirm that with things that we mostly do with 1 hand I use my left, but for things that was build for using right hand I still use right (scissors!)also it really doesn't bother me much day to day to think that I am left handed. Probably the most difficult was in school where armchairs were easier to use when you're right handed but I was writing with my left. Also when using scissors and I tried with my left and can't cut anything.

Mostly ambidextrous here... But more comfortable with my right. Old LH is rather out of practice these days is all. Haha.
