For those who haven't seen it ye, here's a video of a Peking University Professor calling Hong Kong people dogs on public television, after the recent MTR incident.
I assume there will be a big protest coming up soon.

Many of the people in Hong-Kong and Taiwan view themselves as superior to the Chinese from the Mainland. If you ask me all are pretty much the same as both are Chinese and both can be quite obnoxious and noisy. The Hong-Kong people are quite noisy and obnoxious themselves. You can hear them chatting talking in the hallway in any hotel. They literally will chat all the way from their door of their hotel room to the elevator and back. In Taiwan they local will spit their betelnut paste just about any where it could be spit. The locals in HK and Taiwan see themselves as better and higher class people but that all depends on whom you ask. One ride on the MTR where you see how noisy it is and you will see true local blood. The noise pollution in Hong-Kong is quite famous and so is the noise pollution in Taiwan. Either way they have a long ways to go before they catch up with the Japanese people.

I presume that you are an expat as you seem to have picked up the 'I've-been-an-expat-way-too-long syndrome', resulting from living in a new culture for an extended period of time, and starting to miss your homeland.  Everything begins to grate on your nerves, and you begin to find yourself making bigoted remarks, where you were never bigoted before.

One solution is to move home for a bit.  Then you will find a whole new bunch of irritations back in your homeland - irritations that you never had before, but now notice.  You'll start saying things like - when I was in Hong Kong people did xyz - why are people so stupid/rude/ignorant/uptight here?

Then you will be able to return and accept and enjoy a society for what it is, and not what you want it to be.  That's the way it worked for me, anyway.

I gotta say while that professor was a bit over the top there was some element of truth in what he said. On the other hand, many (not all) of the mainland rich people get cocky and think they can do anything now that they're rich. I guess it has to do with poor education, just gotta hope it passes with time.

Every country and every city has its ups and downs. One can find positive and negative things any where one goes. Those that travel often are able to see differences in different cultures and societies. There are many things that I prefer here in Asia and many things that I prefer back home in California. Pointing a few things out does not necessarily mean that one has "I've-been-an-expat-way-too-long syndrome"

I think you literally freakin missed the point. If you saw that video in the link you should have been able to figure out that what I was saying was that many of the Chinese get quite pissed off when they are looked down upon by Hong-Kong and Taiwan people while the Hong-Kong and Taiwan people are not much better themselves. My link was meant to show that while there are people in China who make negative remarks about the people in Hong-kong there were people in Hong-Kong as well that look down on people from China and those that looked down on others are no better themselves than the ones that they look down on.

Look-it guy, I can empathize with your plight, even sympathize with you for Asia IS harsh on failures – especially on foreigners who’d had advantages in life like better education etc and is only expected to do well. But it's like what Yazoo writes - IMHO you HAVE been in Asia too long.

If I can paraphrase correctly what you are saying, it is that Hong Kong people look down on Mainland Chinese but they are "no better" themselves... Is this your point?

Assuming I understand you correctly...

(1) The incident on the MTR in your video link is NOT typical. Seriously that sort of thing is unusual.

(2) Trying to analise a race based on whether or not they talk loudly in restaurants, in hotel lobbys and in the hallway outside your room is nonsense. I spent 7 weeks travelling through Europe last year including 14 countries and I can let you in on a secret... at different times EVERYONE does it!!!

(3) China is a big country with a lot of people. Sure like EVERY country there are well educated, reasonably educated and totally uneducated people. China's recent economic surge has enabled some of the lesser educated to move in areas they are not so familiar with and sure, that can sometimes create interesting situations... but no different than if you picked some red neck out of a trailer park in Little Rock Arkansas and dropped him in down town Manhattan or Beverley Hills.

Every country has this kind of this, being from Sydney, you get a lot of racism. From the wogs hating the Aussies, to the lens hating the Asians, to the Asians hating the Aussies. I grew up with it. To me It's apart of Australia.

I can see why many Honkies are upset with mainlanders coming to Hong Kong and acting the way they normally behave in mainland China.

I think Honkies see themselves are better and more educated than mainlanders and have always had this passive aggressive hate for each other.

Mainlanders behave in ways that some people as being rude but back in mainland it is their standard ( such as spitting and coughing up phlem) and don't see a problem, that's why when incidents happen like this on the subway. Everyone gets angry about it as both sides see them as not doing anything wrong.

I have honkie friends that are local and some that are very local, I remember one time some locals asked us for help and my friends refused to help based on the fact that they were mainlanders.

Personally, and remember this is my opinion, I am Chinese and I don't like mainlanders only because I see their behavior as rude but I can also understand why they behave like that and forgive them.

I believe that people should be more aware and have respect for other countries cultures. Like when I went to Japan, I researched what was normal and what was rude in Japan to avoid trouble.

I think what the "catch up to the japanese " comment was to show how Japanese people are very very polite to each other no matter what. And you can see what I mean if you go to Japan.

I could see that I got weird looks when I walked into the higher brand boutiques. It was difficult to get service until I purchased something.

Can I ask a question to you SEAJ, and this isn't an attack just a personal opinion of yours. Do you find the word nigga or nigger racist? I only ask because I don't find it racist if used in the right context but nigga had beginnings of a racial slur but became a word used by the black community themselves. Do you think that it's racist if the black community uses it?
