New Years Eve in HK/Macau

I'm thinking of going there for new years. How are the celebrations there?  Do people celebrate it much there or is Chinese new years more celebrated?

Hi there.

Yes, Chinese near year's (lunar) is a very big deal there.  But it's not about partying.  It's more like Thanksgiving, but it's like two weeks long.  Everything is closed.  It's really the absolute worst time you can be in Asia if you are looking for sex and partying.

Realize that solar new year's is not particularly significant to Asians.  The only people partying on that night will be expats and foreigners of which there are of course very many in HK and Macau.

Given my druthers, if I had my youth back, I'd much rather spend NYE in a Western country.

LKF is a good place to be during New Year's Eve. That being said, the clubs jack up their cover fees that night. So not too different from any other international city, IMO.

priapus is right.

CNY is a two week long event characterized by everyone going to their home town.  While I can't speak for Macau, Zhuhai pretty much shuts down for two weeks and then is pretty slow coming back up to speed after that.  Since most of the girls in the Macau saunas are from the PRC, I would guess they all return home leaving the saunas extremely short-handed.

Lunar New Year is not celebrated in mainland China so there is no real noticeable difference.  I expect Macau is the same, though since there are more expats, there may be celebrations happening in the establishments which cater to foreigners.  But things don't shuts down, like at CNY.

I can say though, that there is a pretty good fireworks show on Lunar New Year's Eve in Macau.  I can see it from my balcony in Zhuhai.

Sorry for the previous double posting......

The hotels celebrate the solar new year.  Their rates for new years eve is insane.
Is Chinese New Year celebrated the 1 week before and the 1 week after the actual date?  When does things begin to slow and when will it be back to normal?
