Moving to Hung Hom

I will be moving to the Hung Hom area in August through to January.

I've never been there. The closest I've been to HH is TST. What is there to do around Hung Hom?

Are there any recommended bars? Restaurants? Saunas? After that, I am going back to the States for another half a year.

How is the nightlife there? I am expecting it to be more residential. It seems to be a district that's kind of hidden next to TST. I think the only thing convenient about HH as of now is that it's the first stop on the train that goes to Shenzhen! I will definitely be taking advantage of that.

Like you said, the only thing convenient about HH is that it's the first stop to Shenzhen, but if you want to punt, go a step further, take the direct train up to Dongguan.

Good thing about HH is that it's right next to the tunnel to Hong Kong island. Punting over at TST is also easy. By the way, the ferry at Hung Hom to the island is supposedly closed.

Whampoa Gardens is a nice area in Hung Hom, with shopping malls, restaurants, a cinema, supermarkets etc... it's basically a little city on its own.... but it is also very residential and family oriented, you won't see too many dodgy neon signs around.

If you go a bit further to To Kwa Wan then you'll find the rather seedy areas, as it gets closer to Mong Kok.

There are minibuses that go to TST or across the harbour to Causeway Bay and they are very convenient. If you are driving beware of rush hours as the Hung Hom tunnel gets very congested so does the areas surrounding it. There will also be more traffic when there are concerts at the Hung Hom Stadium, which is quite often.

HH is a pretty nice place but not totally 'happening' but as other posters have mentioned, quite residential but still with a decent few shopping areas. They have a decent bowling alley too, if you're into that.

It sounds pretty laid back. I wouldnt mind having cinemas, a mall, and a bowling alley, thats pretty recreational. I read about the sun po sauna but not sure if its worth it to go to. Are there a lot of minibuses in HH going to mk and island?

So there is a direct train that goes to dg? Would anybody mind putting down the feesfor the ride and how easy it is to get around in dg? Thanks!

Direct train Hunghom-Dongguan HK$145.

If by MTR to Luohu HK$31.30, walk across the border and on the CHR to DGG - RMB 45 (50 on 1st class)

If you stick around Chang Ping when in DGG - most destinations by the plentiful taxis RMB 10-15 (BARGAIN or insist on the meter).

Yes, there are many green minibuses that go to TST & MK as well as other areas. It may be not as well connected for some areas in NT or more obscure parts of the Island, but it's not bad.

When I was young, I spent every summer at my grandparent's flat in Hung Hom (I live in America).  They lived just 100 meters away from where a building collapsed in Hung Hom last year.

Sorry, but nightlife in Hung Hom sucks.  Unfortunately, there is no MTR coverage unless you live at the very southern part bordering TST near the Polytechnic University.  You'll need to learn how to take the bus.  Shouldn't be too difficult.

There are minor mongering opportunities in Hung Hom, but I suggest you go to To Kwa Wan instead where there's a great cluster of 141s (cheap prices, but so-so quality).

OK - may be sending you off on a wild-Goose chase (Hey - come to think of it - Hey GOOSE- where ARE YOU???!!)

Anyway, I know for a fact that there are a lot of mistresses being kept in Hunghom.  A LOT!  Reason being that it IS out of the mainstream consciousness of most Tai-Tais here - whilst being very centrally located to both Kowloon as well as Hong Kong side.

So if you've got game - and lotsa balls (remember, there ARE some "big guys" keeping mistresses!) - go for it!!  LOL!

Thanks seaj, but i have no thoughts of any mistresses, lol. Im more leaning towards the lifestyoe there, i.e., restaurants, bars, recreation, a little mongering business, andtransportation. I am pretty excited about the ease of traveling to the mainland! Thanks for all the insight. Keep them coming!
