Times Higher Education University Rankings

Since we got a nice internationally diverse crowd here, I'd like to see what others think of these rankings. Just got updated recently I believe.

http://www.timeshighereducation. ... ation-rankings.html

Although both my undergraduate and graduate universities are well represented, I think the ranking is just god awful as there are some terrible schools in the top 100 that have reputations for binge drinking more than anything else beating out the best of the best of non-US/UK nations.

I think these rankings are very US-biased. Schools like UCalifornia San Diego ranked higher than HKUST. I know that most recruiters in Asia would prefer a HKUST grad than a UCSD grad.

I agree with you. This is totally US-baised Report. There many good university across world but entire list focus mainly on US based university.

Ah, I actually made a mistake on the link. They have a "reputation ranking", which I posted, as well as a "Overall ranking". Here's the link for the overall score: http://www.timeshighereducation. ... 0-2011/top-200.html

I agree that it still very biased and I think the biggest fudge factor comes from the "Citations" category, which always seems the highest for schools that don't seem to belong towards the top. I can't help but think that the banner ads on the right also bump up scores as well...

Why give a bro a negative acceptence point?

This is a chat forum were people can discuss whatever they want? Fool!

This is not a chat forum, this is a punting forum with a chat section.

Ideally it should be punting-related chats but as you can see, we are quite relaxed about topics here within reasonable limits of course.

Btw, 5-htp is well within his privilege to express his opinion on OP's choice of the subject matter through the exercise of negative acceptance points. If you disagree with his opinion, you can exercise your privilege in a similar way as IPevensy. No need for name calling here.

Sorry for the controversy guys. In retrospect, I really should have put this in the Idle Chat thread instead. Can moderators lock this, or want me to delete it?

You are right JckJr - as my father used to say - "Never reply to anything when you are in a bad mood"

So although I disagree with the negative marking - I apologise to 5-htp for calling him a fool!

I saw that too when this was posted. Maybe its more of a rating of worldwide of reputation. So in most part of the world USCD carries a bigger rep than HKUD.  Of course, if you have a local degree, it may carry more favors in its own respective times.  One reason I went to a big name school is because of its larger reach in reputation in case I were to move.

from my point of view these university rankings are waste of time and effort. A fool graduating from a "top" school is still a fool. (does not mean all graduates from these schools are fools) It's much more about prestige than ability. The pedigree of certian schools opens doors though

Meh, rankings are rankings. Schools can be higher in one than the other, it all comes down to the analysis and what youas an individual are looking for. There are many newer schools out there with great programs, but because they don't have the history and name they are not considered the same. Also most top ranked institutions are from the US, most people would love to go to Harvard, Stanford MIT, BU, Cornell, UCLA, USC, maybe Oxford Cambridge insead rotterdamn over HKUST and Chinese U and HKU. Nowadays it's all about the name IMO..
But look at other rankings in the FT HKUST and HKU are up in the charts..
