Your question is too general.  But for me, when I'm going to purchase a computer/laptop/digital cam or something expensive, I'll check both the internet and several shops that specializes in that particular product, once I know the price range, then I can go to a shop that offers the best bang for the buck (taken into consideration the price, warranty, included accessories, service or whatever value you can thrown in with it).

If you are not computer savvy I would recommend you buy from the closest computer mall to where you will be using the computer. Why? Because eventually you will need your computer to be serviced. Though all outlets provide a 6months - 12 months warranty, it is not on-site. You will need to lug your computer back to the shop you purchased your computer to enjoy that warranty.

So unless you are close to Shamshuipo-Golden Arcade, it is not worth the time, sweat, transportation costs to lug your computer for repairs. Besides the price difference among the various computer malls around HK is not that much in net dollars. I live in HK island hence I bought my computer at the 298 Computer Mall in Wanchai. A visit to the technician is only a 5 mins walk for me.

Hey Rasak, you didn't say whether you wanted a laptop or a PC, or MAC.
Everyone is assuming you wanted some sort of a build up from a computer mall. Even though if you get the best parts now, its just going down the ladder very soon with all the newer techs coming out as we speak.

If you go for the tailor built one, with every part of the haywaired components you get, you'll have to get drivers or the whole computer back to where you got the thing from. Recommend only if you know what you're doing.

If you are not a computer freak, then you have the option of PCs from Broadway or Fortress like HP where you get a whole set of restore disks.
Then again, you have the option of MAC. This really depends on what you want.

I always get the biggest external drive i can and store files there just in case my PC does screw up and do a full restore. Trust me, this a a pain in trying to get back the files. Videos and pictures now tend to get bigger and bigger with HD videos and finer pixel pics.

I use a PC from HP and a Macbook Air (Used to use a tailor built from Shamshuipo, just couldnt be bother to setup ever components one by one. Then again, Windows 7 can detect all the components you have anyway.

Please be more specific. Did you want to get customized one where you can chose parts or just general branded ones. If you want customized one there is a tiny store in MK computer center i think it's on the second floor which has pretty good deals

lol, you are starting a trading business, and you are getting advice from a punting forum?

i'm not too sure, but around the golden computer building, there are several buildings that sell computer parts.
i heard from my friends, that prices there are lower.
shops' rents are much lower, hence the cheaper price.

and here's a website to get a general idea of prices.

www.centralfield.com

this site is in chinese, but no problem, just click on the price list. (click on the Tab with DIY)
the products are in English and pretty much self-explanatory.

I usually throw away all the boxes & stuff which is evidence of a new purchase.  If its a small box (like a jewerly box), I may mail it back home.

Some excellent recommendations on places to buy computers in HK....

So we are not just sex starved testosterone fuelled men on this forum.....

RICO's advice is to get a Mac and the Time machine as well...( Backs up your data automatically...)

Plus if you get the application Bootcamp...You have the option to alternate between Windows and Mac....

One downside to the Mac is that all the application are not cheap....

The Mac is supposed to be virus free....RICO is putting that theory to the test big style......

oh... Mac is virus free? nope. absolutely not. (and this coming from a mac advocate). and as for cheap mac software, there's always torrents =P

if cost is a concern, well, a netbook will suffice actually.

Mac are definitely not virus free, I am typing this on one... but they do work quite well and are solidly built. Battery life is very good on the macbooks, I really like the new ones with the HD displays. My hard drive did die on me last year and my 400GB of porn was completely wiped out, so a backup drive is recommended.

The only thing I don't like about Macs is the smugness that comes with using a Mac... "I'm so much better than u because I bought this computer"... no seriously, back in college I had a PC and I just wanted to smash those Macs into their users faces. So many "how can u be using this piece of junk" and "see how my Mac works so much better"... jackasses...

Yeah, mac is not virus free, it's just that there are fewer virus written for macs.

I don't use macs, but ALL my siblings do, and just like what acerbe says, they belong to those apple fanatics that thought all products of Jobs are gift from heaven, and all machine running windowz are inferior.

Anyway, you might want to check your computer with the free antivirus from sophos:

http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/free-mac-anti-virus/

here's a short review: (you might want to read the comment there too)

Not anymore. Dell parts are crap, their stuff die earlier and earlier.
They're cheap but no longer deliver value once you factor in lost data and time due to repair.
