What is up with HBO ???

ya know hbo has had great mini-series like band of brothers. but man i swear the pacific to me seemed like it was a generic wanna be band of brothers but it just had more nudity in it. also boardwalk empire, hey i love steve buscemi but man oh man it seems like they brought the ppl from sopranos over to make this. granted the show did win awards but to me it is not to creative. i guess though they don't have to sass it up with sex cause the good old sopranos had the famous BADA BING nudy bar. i wish tony and the gang would come back but i guess that show is gone for good. amazing james gandolfini was getting a million dollars an episode and he called it quits. money isn't everything i guess

It may sound amazing to some but yes I have a confession,

I have never seen a single episode of the sopranos!  And one of my favorite movies of all time is Goodfellas!

Agreed that The Pacific was very lackluster. I think they tried too hard to make it different from Band of Brothers and everything seemed 'off' in our "hoping for an epic" eyes.

Actually I liked The Pacific, though it wasn't as good as Band of Brothers. I even bought the box set of DVDs.

Pacific was one BIG YAWN. It was also the biggest budget HBO had splashed on a mini series. That said, it is difficult to stay focus when the war was all about Island Hiopping and before the soldiers got settled in anywhere, they're off to capture another island occupied by the Japanese. One big monotony. With Band of Brothers, their target was more simple and that was to reach Berlin which gives the series more continuity and focus.

I liked the character development more in the Pacific, as I could easily remember a lot of the characters.  The episode in Australia was a waste though.
***spoiler***
Why spend an episode talking about a relationship that eventually didn't happen anyway? I bet Leckie's future wife must have felt terrific reading his book, knowing that she was only chosen because Stella had dumped Leckie.

I guess the series "Hung" isn't your thing then?

Band of Brothers was one of my all time favorites too, but like the rest of you - I didn't really get into The Pacific. I can't quite put my finger as to why, perhaps I just didn't connect with the characters or something. They spent time on character development, but the leads in the Pacific were not as strong actors as the leads in Band of Brothers.

hung is an okay series. i wouldn't go nuts over it though. for those who haven't watched the sopranos it is a very good mini series if you love mafia films you will like this  show a lot. the pacific did spend a lot of time on character development which was done okay but i think even the battle scenes were not that great. i think ever since private ryan steven spielberg is just pushing the ww2 genre of course for more money. i mean after this was band of brother and the pacific. then you look at video games you got call of duty.

They'll probably have an african campaign next. Not sure as they would pan out, as it was largely tank warfare. A series on the eastern front would be great, or a series leading up to the d-day invasion.

I thought the problem with The Pacific was that they divided the focus across multiple main characters (without some big event that connected their lives) while Band of Brothers focused on Lieutenant/Captain/Major Winters and Easy Company (the real life Winters actually died recently, RIP).

Yep, on 2 Jan. He'd been sick for some time. There are calls for him to get the medal of honour he richly deserved on d-day. The only reason he never got it was because of a stupid rule, limiting one medal of honour for each division, so they gave him the next best medal.

Offtopic, did anyone read about the aussie who recently got the Victoria Cross? It took some balls to do what he did, risking his life and taken out three Taliban machine guns singlehandely.

Just like the Pacific.  Tailored more for the female audience with those love stories.

Here is a link to wiki, which includes the citation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Roberts-Smith

The news reports exaggerate a fair bit, more than some of the members here at times.

He and two others moved to about 40 metres of the guns.  Upon reaching a position, he shot dead one insurgent at point blank range.  The two other members in his patrol came under heavy fire at a different position.  He exposed his position to draw fire away from them and towards him.  The machine guns then focused on him.  The two soldiers seized this opportunity and took out one of the guns with a grenade.  He then stormed the other two guns and came under heavy (they must have been bad shots!!!).  And he silenced both.  A battle raged on for about 6 hours and in the end his unit killed 60 taliban, while sustaining only two casualties.

I love reading the Victoria Cross citations. One of the most famous is this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Axford
On 4 July 1918 during the attack at Vaire and Hamel Woods, France, when the advance of the adjoining platoon was being delayed in uncut wire and machine-gun fire, and his company commander had become a casualty, Lance-Corporal Axford charged and threw bombs amongst the enemy gun crews. He then jumped into the trench, and charging with his bayonet, killed 10 of the enemy and took six prisoners. He threw the machine-guns over the parapet and the delayed platoon was able to advance. He then rejoined his own platoon and fought with it during the remainder of the operations.

You know what's better than the Sopranos? The Wire. It is a obscured series a few years back about inner city Baltimore drug gangs. Absolutely the best tv I've ever watched, yes even better than the Sopranos. The first few episodes start off slowly but after it's a rollercoaster ride that you can't or want to get off.

One of the best recent close-action write-ups is Sean Naylor's Not A Good Day To Die about Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. Like Blackhawk Down it is intense, riveting direct combat from the individual perspective. Absolutely loved it. I cant wait for HBO or Hollywood to make this into a movie.

i forgot i'm an idiot. the wire was very good. funny i live near baltimore and i asked ppl do drug dealers play a role in baltimore city politics and the ppl were like yeah probably. when i was growing up i use to watch the hitch hiker where they would have some pretty cool sex scenes in it. i also remember tales from the crypt. and when i was really bored i even watched fraggle rock.

The Larry Sanders Show remains the best comedy series EVER made. The episode about Hank taping his "birthday party" is just pure comedy gold. I used to watch Sex and the City quite religiously as well (yeah yeah). Too bad they ruined the name with all these cash grabbing shitty sequel films.

I just leave my laptop on whilst I am at work and it has downloaded by the time Iam home, it is a godsend.

Has some good porn on too!
