From my (limited) reading experience with this site, it seems that the consensus with HG's is that there's no point looking for them in advance because they're usually on in HK for a week or so on a temporary visa. That's not a problem; just look for HG's closer to the time, right?

However, I'm going on holiday elsewhere on Thursday 18 November before going to HK on 24 November and I won't have internet access between going on holiday and going to HK. I would go to an internet cafe while in HK but I also read that we are automatically redirected to another site if we try and access the database with a HK IP address. Has anyone got any suggestions on how I can research HG's for my stay in HK given my current predicament? Any help would be appreciated!

You could use a portal site to access the forum if needed.

Or before you leave figure out what location you want, and find some girls you like.  Write down the agent phone numbers.  Hopefully you will find that one number covers several girls you like.  Then when you are in HK just call that agent.  Ask for the girl you like.  If she is gone ask for a recommendation.  The trick is to be firm if she is not what you like when you see her.

Cheers for the feedback! Are portal sites the same as proxy servers? As for HG's, do agents get arsey if it's a hotel reservation and you refuse because you don't like what you see (either because it was B&S or because she didn't live up to her DB photo)? I'm slightly apprehensive of getting hotel reservations in case I get a really bad B&S.

In an ideal world, I'd love to an outcall but I'm not sure whether my hostel in Chungking Mansion will be fine with that. I can't be sure because there do not seem to be many forum posts regarding hostel outcalls so I was planning to stick to 141 apartments and hotel reservations.

Yes, proxy servers.  They work okay in China.  You should not be redirected while in HK.  Since you could ask for a recommendation it wouldn't really be a regular reservation.  I don't think it would be a problem if you didn't like the girl.

Where are you getting that info from? It is obviously untrue. Perhaps you are confusing HK with the mainland.

Worry not, you will be able to access the db via regular web or mobile while in HK.

But I think most HGs would draw the line at Chungking Mansions.

Use a web enabled phone.  This way you can surf the mobile version and get basic photo(s), telephone and general information.  If you can try the updates tab as the HG / WG will post if they are on vacation. Buying second hand phones should be very cheap.

Cheers for all the replies guys. I read it on the 141 forum but I can't remember which section or the title of the thread because I was reading a ton of threads across all the sections to try and gain an understanding of how this 141 business works in HK. I think it said something along the lines of if you have a HK IP address you automatically get redirected to the HK version of this website if you try to access the DB but you're still ok to access the forum. Maybe I misunderstood it because I had been reading quite literally 50-100+ threads in one sitting or perhaps it was a really old thread! I only found this site a few days ago so I've been cramming as much as possible!

As for surfing the web on a mobile, do you know approximately how much the rate is for a prepaid HK sim? That's a good suggestion and probably less conspicuous than doing it in an internet cafe as I was originally planning!!
