IN a television advert that could kill your appetite, an overweight, middle-aged man is seen lying dead in a morgue holding a half-eaten hamburger as a woman weeps over the linen-clad body.
McDonald's ubiquitous golden arches then trace the dead man's feet with the text "I was lovin' it," a stinging pun on the fast-food chain's long-running slogan "I'm lovin' it."
A voiceover says, "high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks. Tonight, make it vegetarian."
Produced by Washington-based health lobby Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the commercial is set to be aired in Washington DC during the popular The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Thursday.
PCRM says it is also considering running it in Chicago, Detroit, Houston and Los Angeles
The ad "takes aim at McDonald's high-fat menu, with the goal of drawing Washingtonians' attention to the city's high rates of heart disease deaths and its high density of fast-food restaurants," PCRM said.
Studies show that people who consume fast food are at a higher risk for obesity, a factor contributing to heart disease, it said.
But the ad enraged McDonald's.
"This commercial is outrageous, misleading and unfair to all consumers. McDonald's trusts our customers to put such outlandish propaganda in perspective, and to make food and lifestyle choices that are right for them," spokeswoman Bridget Coffing said.
PCRM said its survey showed that Washington has more McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC outlets per square mile than eight other cities with similar population sizes.
McDonald's, the world's largest restaurant chain, has nevertheless seen its earnings grow in recent months despite the global economic crunch, as it has wheeled out a range of alternatives to its famous burgers.

On Friday, the chain reported its same-store sales for August were up 4.9 per cent globally year-on-year.

Nothing wrong with fast food as long as you dont eat it everyday. The chicken wings in HK Mc Donalds are great .

I agree with moderation. I eat Maccas or KFC about once a week, I am not overweight, and my cholesterol is normal. I don't see there's a need to bash/ban unhealthy fast food chains, people can make up their own minds!

I go to Mickey D's often and have a garden salad with chicken. I don't think its where you eat but what you eat. If I was MacDonalds mgmt and saw that add I would have a lawyer contact them and stop the ad from showing. I am sure they have enough legal power to do that.

Macdonalds doesn't have the unhealthiest fast food in the world. That prize belongs to the "Tuna Melt sandwich combo" from Quiznos.

Unfortunately for Macdonalds they are seen as the worldwide standard bearer for U.S.American assembly style junk food cultural imperialism.

there is a McDonalds around the corner from the Ladies Market in Mong Kok. Order your meal on the ground floor street level, dine in walking up the 2 flights of steps to the dining room.

Amazing however is this little nugget of information I have personally seen first hand...

There is a big door at the back of the dining room, opens up to a corridor, walk up one flight of stairs: fake merchandise. Walk down one flight of stairs: brothel.

when i first saw this i thought of the movie super size me. in that movie that guy at mickey d's everyday to see what would

happen to his body and man did he get messed up. but all fast food chains are bad for you. i remember when kfc were

using chickens that had no beaks and also some chickens were pumped up with chemicals that their legs would break from

being so big. and good old taco bell was found to use meat that was on the same grade as cat food. i mean i guess we

all know fast food is bad but we still eat it. i truly believe in these tough economic conditions that mickey d's will still

pull in good profits as they offer low priced food with decent taste. admit it or not it does have taste

It is intereting, when I over 30, I already stay away from M. not only for health, but also even when I ate a meal from M, I still feel hunger....

You can burn your cholesterol with sex. .It like you run for a hours.

I'm just wondering why they are just targeting McDs and not anyone else.  There are loads of Fast Food joints in HK and some must have a higher fat rate than McDs.  And it really depends what you choose from the menu, there are some healthy options there ... if you look hard enough

the fact that if you mention the name "McDonald" any where in the world(unless it's some poor stricken country like somalia or something similar) people would know what you are talking about, therefore it's easier to relate to.
not every country have taco bell or some other chain that might seems big...but not as worldwide known.
and i do agree with there's nothing wrong with eating those food as long as you keep yourself active, even if your eating healthy foods all the time, but only sits all day without moving..you will grow fat too...

I think HK McDonald's burgers taste better than in the US, but it's usually because when I have one I've been jonesing for one for weeks.  If only HK had an In-n-Out Burger joint!

Very unfair to single out McDonalds in a sea of restaurants offering the same category of fattening foods. Maybe we should promoting exercising, or is that so way out there?

Happy Meal 'has no mould after six months'

A NEW York woman who purchased a McDonalds Happy Meal six months ago says the uneaten burger and fries are in as good shape as they were the day she bought them.
The claim, backed up by a seemingly indestructible Happy Meal sitting in artist-photographer Sally Davies' Manhattan apartment, has amazed people around the world.
The burger has featured on television shows and become the subject of intense speculation as people wonder how fast food can apparently show barely a trace of age after six months on a plate - and whether Ms Davies is telling the truth.
"It all began with a bet with a friend of mine," she said. "So on April 10th I bought one hamburger and I began photographing and nothing really happened. It smelled for one day, and it stopped."
The burger has shrunken a little, but is mould-free and visually the same as one delivered in one of McDonald's famous boxes.
As Ms Davies says, there is no odour. Her two dogs, a Shih Tzu called Suki and Charlie the poodle, walked past without showing the slightest interest.
The Happy Meal's endurance has puzzled and worried many, wondering whether food lasting so long can be healthy.
McDonalds declined an interview request, but said: "Menu items are freshly prepared in our restaurants.
"It is not possible to provide a detailed explanation regarding these claims without knowing the conditions in which these food items were kept.
"That said, we strongly caution anyone from jumping to conclusions."
The global chain also said: "Bacteria and mould only grow under certain conditions... If food is/or becomes dry enough, it won't grow mould or bacteria."
Some accuse Ms Davies of mounting a stunt, which she denies.
"I'm getting hate mails from people: 'You are a charlatan, the fried fries are not in the same position,' or 'you are doing it to enhance your career!'" she said.
"But most of the people react positively; they are afraid and are wondering what they eat.
"I don't see why I would do a hoax; I wish people would buy one and do the same experiment."

In the movie supersize me, the guy who ate nothing but mcdonalds food suffered from alot of mental problems and health problems.

I know exactly which one you are talking about, there is a double exit leading to some weird staircase that goes directly out to the street, I believe that is where the bathroom is located if I recalled correctly.  Sigh.... I miss HK

HK has better stuff too, like corn as a side, mango and green tea sundaes, and my all time favorite, SHAKE SHAKE FRIES!  Seaweed flavor! LOL...  it also helps that in HK a Filet O Fish is a breakfast sandwich!
