What are they doing to Nana plaza in BKK?

Just came across an interesting story on Nana Plaza in Bangkok - the scene of many of Lister's adventures when he was a younger bro and indeed the place where I really cut my teeth as a monger! (Ahh... good memories!)

It is now in the middle of major renovations/demolitions and no-one seems to know exactly what is going on.

There is a short story here (okay, not much of a story and no info about what is actually going on!) - http://www.sukhumvit-psycho.com/

I have read on another forum that even the owners of the bars there don't know what is happening! Here's hoping it is not some sideways attempt by the Thai gov't to bring down this excellent complex!

Pic taken from the above website.

EDIT: Just found an update here - http://www.davetheravebangkok.co ... on-not-destruction/

"NANA PLAZA UPDATE 11/08/10 - The latest news is that we believe the construction in Nana Plaza will be to build a large beer garden.  The foundations are being laid, as we speak!  Apparently, the same beer bars will NOT be built up again.  Furthermore, to dispel the myth Nana Plaza will NOT be knocked down and made into a car park.  I cannot confirm this 100% yet, but I tend to go with the beer garden theory.  I asked the Thai manager who takes care of the Nana Plaza office and even he was rarther vague.  Welcome to Amazing Thailand, the place that never ceases to amaze us and confuse us at the same time!"

So it seems Nana is safe - for now!

I was just in Nana last weekend and biz seems as usual in the surrounding bars (I did wonder about why the middle had been cleared out).  In fact Rainbow 2 seemed better than usual in number of youthful attractive girls versus many of the times I've been there.  I like the Rainbow bars as they seem slightly better in overall quality, but I usually pay 2,500 baht for short time and 4,000 for overnight + 600 baht bar fine, which I know is on the pricey side of mongering in BKK.

Rats, cockroaches, weird smells, discarded cocks from the lady boys? The place is a shit pit. BUt great fun though. I fucked this girl there last time and I swear to god she had the smallest body I've ever encountered. When I rested my balls against her pussy my cock was well over her belly button

The old rumour was that the master lease for the entire plaza was going to expire in a few years and this was just the start of the entire Nana Plaza teardown.

The current rumour is that they knocked down the old beer garden just to build a new one.

Contrary to popular belief, Thailand's sex industry isn't their main source of tourism revenue.  Even so, Bangkok wouldn't tear down Nana Entertainment Plaza because then they would just have to move it somewhere else.  It's going to exist and right now it's in a controlled environment.

Anyways, there's nothing to worry about.

I've also had a few good nights at the Nana plaza and its surrounds.

But everytime I'm there, I did always feel wary - on how most of the denizens there are quite aggressive, how filthy the whole place is and MOST IMPORTANTLY that this is a place where a fire or even any kind of emergency situation is going to end up in a lot of deaths and/or injuries.

The place is just so claustrophobic and without proper Fire dispersals points/a warren of rat infested staircases that's definitely NOT going to be adequate if eveybody is rushing down at the same time.

But whilst I hope that the place would be made a bit more safe, I will nonethelss miss the "special atmosphere" of this arm-pit of Bangkok!
LOL!

...

BKK in general and Nana in particular is such a contradiction. On the one hand, there is so many things to dislike. On the other, those same things form part of the great attraction of the place!

Well... worst case, there is always Soi Cowboy!
