Wimbledon 2010 - Marathon match

Besides all the World Cup action - The world's most prestigious tennis tournament started earlier this week - and boy what story they have

John Isner (USA) and Nicolas Mahut (FRA) are still stuck in their second round match after 10 hours of play at 59-59 in the fifth set. Play had to be suspended for the second day because of fading lights. The decision meant that, incredibly, the contest would go into a third day, having been called off at two sets all on Tuesday for the same reason.
I can only agree with Roger Federer: "I love this! I don't know if I was crying or laughing. It was too much."

For reference:
The longest at Wimbledon had been the famous battle in the days before tie-breaks between Pancho Gonzales and Charlie Pasarell in 1969, which took five hours 12 minutes and finished 22-24 1-6 16-14 6-3 11-9 to Gonzales.

With all the action going on with the World Cup, I had missed this. Was this broadcast on TV being one of the early rounds?

No, they had breaks - they didnt even play the 2nd day because of bad lights. I am sure they would eat banana's, apple's and various other healthy foods, not pizza .

I was shocked when I heard about this! With all the world cup action the winbledon is going unnoticed

they played for 7hrs on the second day. They started the second day with the fifth set. With the amount of aces served (both players close to 100) there was hardly any chance for a break in 118 (!) games played.

I don't think this has been broadcasted, they were playing on one of the small courts only - unless they have cameras on all of them these days.

Its a crazy match.  I'm watching it right now at 66-66 and doesnt seem like they have the energy to run anything down and nobody can seem to get a break point.  Who knows how long its going to go on for.

Wonder how Isner could recover from this match in the next round and condolences to Mahut. He had tried very hard.

Actually he could not recover... He lost 0:6, 3:6, 2:6 since he had to play 20 hours after finishing the marathon match. Ishner was slowon his legs, seemed to have a veeery heavy arm and lost in 73 minutes.

Mahut - loser of the marathon match - had to go back to court #18 for a doubles match which had to be postponed because of the fading lights, again. "Groundhog day!"

Thanks homer for the update. I'll start watching some tennis this weekend. I'm not much of a soccer fan.

Isners height gives him huge serving advantage. Not sure it impact endurance levels in any way.  Basketball players are in great shape and have tough endurance test in games. Wonder whether any studies on relation of height to endurance
