the last time i went to Vancouver there was this weekend night market kind of thing somewhere in Chinatown. it took me a while to ask around to find the place since no one knew exactly how to get there. anyways it's like a small flea market with a live band playing, but the main attraction was the food court. tapioca drinks, fried curry fish balls, lots of different kinds of buns, sui mai, squid, chinese donuts, there was plenty of finger food and meal type of deals. mostly everyone was there for the food court and a little after dinner shopping. that was a fun experience with some good food. maybe you should try it out.

well, Sun Sui Wah is one of the biggies in the VLHK (very large HK restaurant) category, and pretty pricey.

Shiang Garden is always pretty good.

Too many choices in Richmond...

Hit up Richmond for King Crab (forgot the name but its close to Kum do a famous bakery that sells wife cakes), and Hon's for cheap chinese food. There's also a 24/hour restarant on number 3 road that serves HK style food.

You *have* to go to Kirin in Richmond (http://kirinrestaurants.com/index.php5?page=richmond). It has the best dim sum I've had in my life (yes, including the stuff I've had in HK).

forget about chinese resturants in downtown. I dont think any good one exist there. If you really want chinese food, richmond is where you should be.

downtown is all about japanese, korean and western fine dining. Best of the best j and k restaurants are in downtown.

Chinese restaurants are a bit fewer than say, Japanese restaurants, in downtown Vancouver. But there are a few good ones. Kirin on Alberni street is always solid, and if you want more casual then there's Hon's on Robson. Sometimes I go to Victroria (above the Burrard skytrain station) for dimsim during weekdays and the place is always packed.

i didn't know they have a website devoted to the event. if i ever go back i will definitely go there again. plenty of good food and lots bargain items for sale. hey i wonder how come they dont have a chinese night market event here in california. that would be such a popular event if anyone ever decides to do it because i would totally go and i know a lot of other people that would be interested also.

I agree with SSW and kirin.  Also, Fisherman Wharf on the second floor of Aberdeen center is pretty solid too.

If you want to eat some good Japanese tapas, head to Guu.  They have 3 locations in vancouver and 1 in richmond.

don't go to congee noodle house (main and broadway) ... they are way overpriced and quality is only so so. I went there for "siu yeah" and was very disappointed.

if you like kintaro i would recommend the that new ramen place next to garlic guu (bidwell and robson). The shiyo ramen is way better than anything I've ever had (in vancouver anyway).
