VTunnel and Junkmail

Have been using VTunnel lately and ever since a virus had infiltrated my email address book and sent an email advertisement to all the email addresses in my name. Don't know exactly whether VTunnel is the actual culprit. Are there any bros here that have had a similar problem with such a vicious virus? I am using Mac OS and thought it was immune to most viruses.

Bro geoduck;

Nope!

While in China, I always use vTunnel and so far I have not experience such problem. I am sure it is not vTunnel.

You might have picked up an adware from visiting a website that has made its way on your OS. Best to use internet security software to clean up the little bugger.

AP, Have changed my passwords as I am using Yahoo Plus for all my emails. The junk mail sent out in my name are in my SENT Mail Folder. Maybe someone got in and messed with it but don't know how they could do that as I thought Yahoo was pretty secure.

Try gmail. Even after a concerted hacking attempt by the Chinese government to access dissident email accounts was unsuccessful.

hope it wasn't an ad for 141 that was sent to your address book Geo! I have heard of this sort of thing happening to PC's all the time but not Macs. Were you running Virtual PC? I used VTunnel in Jan and no problem, also using MAC OS.

This has been a real nightmare for me and spent the entire night figuring out what had happened. Seems this has happened to many others as well. All I could do is change all my passwords. Was using VTunnel and had my yahoo mail page opened at the same time. The fact that all the sent mails are still in my Yahoo Sent Folder, could only assume something hacked my Yahoo account. What's embarrassing is that all my business contacts can see each other's email address. Will take atomic's advice and switch to Gmail but it's expensive because for US$50 a year per account you only get limited storage space while Yahoo Plus may cost twice as much but it has unlimited storage. I get about 300 emails a day (about 100 junk and the rest for business) so this adds up rather quickly.

Am using vtunnel at the moment, apart from the occasional pop up have not noticed anything strange to my emails. I assume my virus scanner would have alerted of any viruses while running vtunnel. I'm using avast at the moment.

My gmail account is free, I assume because I'm only using it for personal use and don't require a lot of storage. You might find you're getting a lot less junk mail with gmail also. The amount of junk mail I get is close to zero.

My gmail also free. I haven't read up on it to see if there is a high cost option or how much storage is allowed.

One thing I do is use multiple browsers. For example, I am doing some work using a web mail now, but that is on Firefox. I am also looking at 141 but that is on Safari. Not sure if that helps but i have never had a problem.

Gmail personal accounts has over 7gb or more free storage so that should be plenty of spaceunless you are keeping pics and vids which will take a chunk of storage.

Google has business services which allows companies to setup email accounts and online storage, etc. The basic cost is roughly USD50 per account per year.

Do you use QQ, MSN or other instant messenger applications? Occasionally the services get compromised and send stuff to your address book. MSN have been known to get hacked

I don't use vtunnel in China as I found it to be a little unstable (like my exwife!). I use pimpmyip.org here and have had no problems so far

No QQ and no MSN. Only thing I use is SKYPE. As for the Gmail paid option of US$50 a year, this does not give you any extra storage space. I've looked into it before and think I would switch to Gmail as I've no more faith in Yahoo.

Beware - Vicious Virus in VTunnel site

Have found the problem to my recent malaise. When using VTunnel there are pop up windows and when these windows pop up, they send out a java script which will copy your other open tabs. Once this happens, when you go back to the tab, this is actually a fake Yahoo or Gmail log in page. It will ask you to log in again and thus you've just given your password away.

BROS BEWARE - Look closely at the URL or the webpage when asked to enter your password.

As this is may affect a number of bros logging in to 141 with VTunnel using a Mac, think I shall start a separate thread.

It may be time to look at getting subscribing to one of the VPN providers? Here's a list of non-free proxy browsers I was looking at when I was living in China. I didn't end up using any of them as I found the free VPN sufficient at the time, but by the sounds of it this may be about to change.

I am afraid that the days of virus free computing for the Mac may be over. It has always been the case of security through obscurity but as market share increases Mac owners must now be more diligent in protecting their Mac.

how did you managed to figure this out?

Got this info from the Unofficial Apple Weblog. It's a new virus called Tab Nabber and discovered by a lead designer of Firefox browsers. You can get more information here:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/201 ... ng_phishing_attack/

It is vicious. I was a victim of it so beware of those open tabs.
