A PAEDOPHILE ring was smashed after one of the perverts left his mobile phone on a bus.
Another passenger anded it to the driver who checked it to trace the owner - and was horrified to find sickening images of children on it.
Police were able track down the pay-as-you-go phone's owner because he had used his supermarket loyalty card to top it up.
When they raided Michael Fraser's home they found another 14 mobiles which led them to other offenders.
Fraser, who uses a wheelchair, admitted offences relating to the possession of indecent images of children.
He was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court to a three-year community order.
On the back of the evidence found at his home, ten police forces were able to launch inquiries into 70 suspects, five of whom have been convicted.
Fraser, 50, had accidentally left his mobile on the No. 100 bus from Gateshead's Metrocentre to Newcastle in Frebruary last year.
His lawyer, Brian Hegarty, said: "The defendant accepts that he has an unhealthy interest in children, which is of many years standing."
He was not convicted of distributing the images but Judge John Evans still considered locking him up.
The judge eventually spared him jail when probation officers said he was eligible for sex offenders' treatment.
