short term rental

I've been looking over Craig's list and feel the short term rental prices (500-600) are way too high.  Can someone suggest a short term rental around 300 USD for a month?

preferably wanchai or central or somewhere near nathan road in Kowloon.  I've notice most ad's show very small rooms with high prices, this isn't Tokyo.

This does not belong in Q&A.  It should be in the Chat forum.

And while "this isn't Tokyo," it IS Hong Kong; a metropolitan area that has one of the highest cost of living in the world.

Sure, no problem, they're called "cage rentals."

$300 a month! no way jose!

I can only think of 3 places.

CWB has a hostel which is $95 HKD a night it is grotty though no wifi and the dorms are packed 3-4 beds high, it was run by a Mr Lee. Dorms though. $11US a night = $330 US total

ChungKing Mansions Block A 3rd floor has Taiwan hotel which is $120HKD a night + $100 deposit, room is basic air con TV, ensuite one narrow bed + free WIFI If you stay long term more than a week the silver haired woman from Taipei (or if you lie and say you are from say Hualien (but be careful she asks probing questions) she will give you a $15 discount. Private rooms.$14 US a night

There are similar hostels and hotels in Mongkok but they are disgusting and cramped, NEVER stay in a NT hotel though they are horrid. = $420 US a month

But Hong Kong is Hong Kong and there are places to suit each and every budget, for $15o you can stay in Sham Shui Po for $200 a month (gone up since the report)

In a cage home

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORL ... ge.homes/index.html

However they may not want to rent it to you for such a short time, but simply around that budget there is nothing, if I were in HK you could stay on me sofa.

Out of morbid curiosity I am looking to stay in one of those SSP books as research for my 5th book (my editor was moved by a scene I portrayed about the cage homes in SSP in my 3rd novel and thus I thought I might attempt to do what Orwell did in Down and out in Paris and London and go see for myself what it is like). And write my 5th book on this subject.

HK's real estate is the most expensive in the world. Of course you cannot compare Tokyo with HK. If you stayed in Tsuen Wan, daily commuting costs can be quite expensive as you mentioned you wanna go to Wanchai and CWB.

Agree. What you save in rent would mean opportunity cost in travel/commuting time and costs.

Have you tried looking in like Prince Edward/Yau Ma Tei area?  Goes for less than prime Wan Chai/Central but still have good transport proximity/convenience.

Good topic, I'm probably going to fall into the same boat in the near future being in Hong Kong for 2 months, any recommendation for sites or places to look for short term furnished apartments for rent at a value price?

Wanchai and Central for US$300 a month??? It is possible but you have to imagine what you can get for this amount in Manhattan first...

The easiest way to find short term rental is in those one star hotels. Still, they are about US$1000 a month

For $300 a month, you are looking at shared housing in a remote area....

Not even the remote areas, as my dad's place out in the stix is 4800 a month.

Check out chungking mansions its your ONLY option for that kind of money, anything lower is cage homes, no two ways about it, lest you want to camp out on tung-o beach (camping is illegal in HK but tung-o is abandoned)

Good suggestion for Chungking mansion. Many expats living there. You will feel right at home.

i have to disagree on the high cost for commute from tsuen wan to CWB / wan Chai area - at least considering the MTR
Looking at the fare details - it's roughly 22 HK$ return from tsuen wan by MTR - while from MK its 19 HKD return - so that should not be much of a difference on a one month stay

wow, US300 a month? I cant imagine what that would look like? Go to a bar, pick up a WG, find out where she is staying and what she pays, they have very modest share accommodation usually with other WG's. Imagine "moving in" with a few girls... now that could be fun.

HK over price joke...

Very weird,  I can rent a 1 bedroom with hardwood floors, heat and water for only $390 a month and only 2 blocks from
the lake in Cleveland.  I have world class Museums, sports, parks, libraries, orchestra, schools, hospitals, transportation, better
looking women, horse tracks, zoo, rain forest, concerts, metro parks, theater, plays, way better food and less expensive.  Honestly nothing
great about HK.  Well, the temples are pretty cool and some of the sites but nothing really great.
