Pay-as-you-go Wireless Broadband in HK

Hi,

Does anyone in HK now if any of the mobile provider sell a wireless broadband access on a pay-as-you-go contract in HK? I tried looking for details but all seen to only offer monthly wireless broadband plans.

I plan to come to HK soon and staying at a friend's holiday appartment but they don't have broadband installed. But I want to be able to access the internet so was wondering if I can get a pay-as-you-go wireless dongle to use with my laptop for the period I'm in HK. i.e. for $100 for so many MB. As in UK, we have such offer for wireless broadband and wondering if HK offer anything like it.

Any advice or help woudl be great.

Check with one of the large networks such as 3 or Vodaphone in the UK before you leave because those networks are available in HK

I have a 3 dongle for when I am in the UK but not tried it in HK as I stay in a hotel when I am there however it may well be that it will work in HK, if it does then problem solved

Keep on mongering....

Where is it? out in the stix or in a city? if it is in a city maybe you can log on to the PCCW WIFI network, you don't need to buy it before using it but the first thing it opens up to is a buy credit screen in 2008 last time I used it it was $150 for 28 days, and you can get WIFI out of most telephone booths, the router installed in those things is pretty powerful too as my uncle uses it on a longer contract in his Tong flat.

I don't know, his apartment is in NT - 10mins drive out of Sheung Shui train station. So not sure if PCCW WIFI network is available but will check online now and see. Thanks for the info.

Yes, I have a 3 dongle too on a very cheap monthly contract of £7.50 for 5Gb data limit in the UK which is great. However, I did check the cost of using it abroad and the cost is like £3 per mb !! which is why I'm looking at alternative way.

But thanks for the suggestion.

I don't know there is a hotspot locator here:
http://maps.pccwwifi.com/DMap.html?hotspot=001F412CF053 (you may want to zoom out a bit)

http://www.pccwwifi.com/eng/index.htm

7 pages worth for TST, essentially I reckon you are going to have to Google street view and have a look if your flat is within 100metres (vertically and horizontally) and see if there is a phone booth nearby as per

As said my uncle is in a Tong Lau about 3 or 5 floors up in Taipo and connects to the telephone booth across the road when he is in HK.

PCCW definitely does offer pay-as-you-go wireless - and they have hotspots all over the place, including most of the payphone kiosks in the street

You can also find one of an increasing number of free hotspots (e.g. Harbour City in TST is free and fast)

TST also has several places with totally free internet wi-fi, such as the Empire Centre, TST centre and the Shangri-La hotel coffee shop

Also obviously any 24-hr mcd's has free 20 mins every day
