Non-Mandarin/Cantonese Speakers

just out of curiosity, how many bros on this forum don't speak any mandarin or cantonese but regularly go punting in hk? do you tend to stick with english speaking wg's or do you visit non-english speakers and just deal with the language barrier?

I tend to visit girls even they don't speak any english at all. In my opinion, it's really not a problem if sex is the topic. The body language can do the trick.

I know some basic cantonese. I guess just asking for the price, her name, age is sufficient enough.

well i speak canto fluently. i just can't read chinese, so that's why I'm on the english forum. my mandarin is very limited, but I still go for HG's, many of whom can only understand and speak very little canto, if at all.

I'm sure nobody knows what the stats are, bro, but I can say that dealing with agents and WGs has done more for my proficiency in both dialects over the past two years than the expensive lessons the company is providing at the moment.
The teacher who comes to our office twice a week keeps remarking that I seem to be getting in more practise than any of my colleagues with the PTH and I just smile and tell him I talk to 'tourists'. I would never tell him what kind of tourists I've been chatting with! I have a great little English to PTH dictionary and and have learned useful words and phrases that the teacher doesn't have on his agenda like "wo-men tui yifu, hao bu hao" which means "let's get undressed, OK?"
That phrase is not going to appear in the office curriculum until pigs learn how to fly! LOL

Not true, bro.  There are plenty of bros here who speak Canto and/or Mandarin (putonghua).  The key is that English is prob more convenient if not a first language for the rest here.  There are also some bros who also come over to benefit from both the English and Chinese forums.

In any case, the common answer that you'll get is that you only need body language with a WG.  Don't worry if you can't whisper sweet nothings to the lass.

I speak zero cantonese and mandarin and did not have a problem at all punting in HK. But in terms of non-punting while HK was a breeze it was pretty tough in mainland China - even in Beijing it was a real pain to get by with only English

I speak English only, so stick to the Macau sauna scene, where the routine and pricing scheme is completely transparent.  I have tried the HK HG scene in the past without much luck.

I speak Cantonese fluently, speak Mandarin like a kindergartener, and with help from a dictionary can read Chinese pretty well.  Much better at reading traditional characters as opposed to the Communist characters. Reading the Chinese forum here poses an extra challenge, or some might call it fun, in that a lot of the language is pretty deep slang.

Obviously, English is my first language.  90% of the girls I do in the US don't speak any English, so I've had plenty of practice already.

No big secret. The Oxford Concise English-Chinese 4th edition dictionary. I just look up words and string them together and sometimes get laughed at but most of the time the message gets through to the WGs at least.

I have started travelling regularly in mainland China recently and I agree you don't have to get far off the beaten track before things get really hard without Mandarin. So I've bitten the bullet and started taking lessons. I am enjoying learning this language, but for me it's all very strange and I am making very slow progress. I did not expect to be able to learn to read Chinese, but I'm starting to learn a bit of reading and writing as well.

An invaluable book is the Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary - it not only gives words, it also contais useful phrases and  explains some of the grammar as well. An excellent web site is www.yellowbridge.com.

I have yet to try out my Mandarin withn a WG, but will post a report when I pluck up the courage to do this!

Lots of cell phones support English Chinese dictionaries (android, nokia e/n series, palm, iphone etc )

Makes it easier to carry around one device (map dictionary etc)

Or if your cell supports browsing you can use some translate sites (eg Cantodic )

Here is a pretty good list of tools

http://www.chinese-forums.com/showthread.php?t=9739

If you want to try to read the chinese side check out firefox with perapera-kun or google chrome which does on the fly translatoins
