Working Abroad

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but i browsed and could not find anything on this.

Any bros have suggestions on work for someone with an Associates in Business Administration(this would probably keep me from getting far).

Looking for some place in HK/China/Taiwan.

I've looked into Teaching English as a second language but I want to see if there are other options.

Thanks for the help bros, or maybe this could be a discussion thread for bros who are also looking for work?

There have been many threads about teaching English abroad (as in HK).  Consider checking this one out:

Go to Thailand. Anyone with a white face who claims to have attended a university in "Amelica" can get a job with a salary that is very good by Thai standards (but terrible by US standards, and pretty bad by HK standards). In HK and Taiwan they're a bit smarter, and will judge you based on what I assume is a no-name college degree rather than on your white face. (By the way, I assume you're white. If you are any other race, you will never get a good job in Asia.)

Also note that my friends and I will snicker at you, as another white guy who moved to Asia for the chicks, but you are allowed to snicker back.

If you want to work in Thailand, make sure you have a work permit or you could be in deep shit!

There are plenty of people in Thailand who are so desperate to stay in the country that they will happily shop anyone who is suspected of acting illegally to the police or immigration authorities. This includes shopping bars that allow any form of nudity on their premises.

Despicable low lifes.

there is certainly a need for english in taiwan. im not sure about the other areas, but i am based in taiwan so i am more familiar with the details there. if you are teaching certified it would certainly be a plus as that would increase your chances to land a job in which the schools sign you. i know many middle and high schools are hiring foreign teachers for their english classes. visas will be taken care by the schools.

on the other side i also know that some teachers are full time tutors in which they make significantly more than those teachers who receive pay from school and attend to small-mid sized classes.

just for your reference.

You will never, ever get a job teaching English in Asia. In countries like Thailand, people still don't understand that an American or a Briton can be of any ethnicity. In countries like HK or Taiwan, they will tell you, "I know that you're an American and you speak American English, but our students' parents are paying for a white face."

This is from secondhand experience of several Asian-American friends, with degrees from good colleges, who wanted to teach English in Asia.

That sounds a slight bit high from what I've heard, at least for teaching at a cram school as opposed to a university. Taiwan can be pretty cheap for cost of living, especially if you speak Putonghua (do you?).

Isn't/wasn't bro Marsupial an English teacher in Taiwan? I haven't seen him around here in a while.

Note that saying that you are an English teacher will definitely not get oohs and ahhs (at least not the positive kind) from the Taiwanese chicks. But your US passport and your greater height (compared to Taiwan-born guys) will serve you well.

kfc...if you brush up on your chinese...you could run with a firm in china or some boss of a manufacturing/trading company to be a translator/admin/personal assistant sorta position.  I was offered this by a boss that I happened to teach English to, and he offered me the job.  Told me about all the perks of travelling (think of the punting possibilities) and business experience etc etc.  I wasn't even a teacher and I had a Business Degree just like you.  but i turned him down when price negotiations didn't work out.

so...just try getting those...sometimes you see these ads in the paper that are kinda hiring for these strange positions.

This is true. Most places only want the white face. Even if your university record is perfect from a top school, if you're asian they will pick any regular white person over you. I think most places in HK and TW require a bachelors degree anyway so you not qualify anyway. You maybe should look into private english lessons but it can be hard to find students.

Damn that sucks.  I'm an ABC and have considered just quitting my job and going abroad to teach English for a year or two.  I had figured the experience itself, the opportunity to actually learn some real Chinese, and chance to sample the girls of 141 would be worth a small sacrifice in already small income.  But if I won't even be able to get a job, then I'd be completely screwed...

Not really true about asians not being able to get english teaching jobs in asia, I have a lot of friends (ABCs, ABKoreans) teaching english in Korea, Taiwan, Shanghai etc.  Didn't seem like they struggled to get the job either.

Agree that its a little easier for caucasians to get the job, but not impossible (or even hard) for asians to get the job.. so don't lose hope.
