Guys! Would it be possible to buy an iPhone in Hong Kong, bring it back to Japan and use it in Japan with the Docomo SIM card?

Yes. 3G iphone will work. 2G iphone will not work.

Just to further add, all iPhones 3g and 3gs in hong kong via official vendors are not locked and can be used around the world.

You can get it cheaper with a contract plan. But for the interest of the original poster who wanted it 'sim free' and to take it back to Japan to use, I thought I would share the 'handset only' price.

Just go to the big electrical appliance outlets like Broadway or Fortress which they sell just the handset.

Why not wait a little longer for the next iPhone version? Should be out in a few months time...

Being from Canada, I can safely say it's not a bad deal at 5k. Convert that back to CAD and it's about what you would pay here but without the taxes in HK and on 700 CAD you would get taxed almost 65 here.

I've got a feeling that it would be the same as the price advertised on the apple website.

As with phones (from my experience), the prices are more or less the same, give or take $50...

Buying these expensive items from big sellers are a must for me, as a general precaution, beware that items in the shop 'Hong Kong Electricity City' are less than other sellers, simply because they are imported items and may not carry the HK equivalent warrant. (named 水貨 in chinese)

yes the iphone is cheap with plan. but if you calculate the cost of at&t plan with
phone. you will think differently.
all prices are in (usd)

iphone 3gs with plan-----$200 + $139/month ($1660year) = $1860 for the year with phone.

unlock iphone 3gs with tmoble--- $500 + $40/month($480year) =$980 for the year with unlock iphone but uses t-moble.

iphone/at&t= $1860
iphone/tmoble= $980

now thats why ppl get unlock iphones. it save's in the long run,,,,
