RMB Exchange Rates

Hi All;

Kindly share how you guys exchange your RMB rates and where can we get the best exchange rates?

I would change my HKD to RMB at the near-by neighbourhood store for convenience. RMB10,000.00 = HKD11,351.00 this morning.

Please share?

I'm not a local, but I exhcanged thousands of $US at a place on Humphreys Ave. in TST last month.  The moneychanger is inside a Tailor's shop.  This guy was giving me the stated exchange rate, less a miniscule fraction.  He was the best around and I looked around quite a bit in TST (maybe 20 places) including the banks and near the ferry.

The best thing to do is open an HSBC account and make all your exchanges there. They only take like 3 cents off the fx rate. Everywhere else sucks. But if you must, negotiate like hell in TST and you might be able to get a decent rate.

1.1351 is pretty good rate. On the lower side.
I got it at 1.1325 few days back in Sheung Wan.

Most of the regular china punters got it from Chungking Mansion if u are going for stacks of cash.

If you have HSBC RMB account - union pay, they offer appx 1.14.
sometime I do not carry so much cash, I just utilise the rMB credit card, 0.01 variance aint much.

The one at the cross border (lo Wu) is usually on the high side, 1.16 to 1.18.
Not sure bout the CCB Yviemy talking bout. Perhaps at acceptable rate.

"The one at the cross border (lo Wu) is usually on the high side, 1.16 to 1.18." - this one on the HK side as one gets off the train is a rip off.

For the HSBC account, if there are no banks in my area, is it possible to open an account by mail?  For example, I would open account by mail to Hong Kong HSBC with initial American dollar deposit, and take money out in Hong Kong dollars?

Watch out for fakes....!

Rampant counterfeits in China.

Much more important to watch out for than the best exchange rate.

Just withdraw your money in Hong Kong at one of the ATM's which has RMB services.  Rates is not the best but OK - plus you have the comfort of knowing that you have recourse in the unlikely chance of you withdrawing a fake note from there.

I even try NOT to withdraw from an ATM in china

the CCB counter that I mentioned in post #7 has a machine that they put through the notes right in front of you to show they are the real thing...

RMB

Beware! if the rate is too good to be true, there may be a few phony ones stuck in the stack.
I have used the changer in the Mirador Mansion for years and he marks his real RMB with a little ID to prove it is the real McCoy.  His shop is near the Bristol St entrance and the rates are fair.

I know that in my HSBC premier account, I can hold and exchange any currencies.

You could also go to a Canada HSBC and open your account there and tell them to assist you to also open a Hong Kong based account.

I just changed a few thousand HKD last night at my usual Money Changer in Hung Hom area.

RMB10,000.00 = RMB11,352.00

I do have HSBC and Hang Seng Bank Account but have never withdraw cash in CP. It seem convenient but heard there is a RMB30.00 or RMB50.00 service charge on top of the low exchange rates. If the Banks offer good exchange, wouldn't it be convenient to just withdraw cash at the ATM located at MIRATON Hotel just beside the 7-11 store.

Concur, the worst place to exchange money is at the Airport. Not only in Hong Kong, all the Airport around the world as well. Also, let it be known that the money changer in Hung Hom Station offer lousy rates as well. The Money Changers there in HH Station are simply waiting for Suckers.
