Obama wins nobel peace prize. Why?
Hard to believe that a U.S. President can win a peace prize while engaged in two wars.
Can some one please inform me as to why Obama has gotten a Nobel Peace Prize when he has yet to do what he has gotten the prize for?

Take it easy bro. You sound more pissed off than the whole forum combined over
this matter.

Wish i could tell you why he got the award but unless i get elected to the White House
or failing that, getting called to serve on Nobel's Selection Board, i can't answer that
question.

But as men on the street, what we can see is that it probably is just a political move more
than him actually deserving the award based on merit. Don't like it but what can you do about
it eh.

The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee — four of whom spoke to The Associated Press, said awarding Obama the peace prize could be seen as an early vote of confidence intended to build global support for the policies of his young administration.

And the aims of this administration are large indeed...
1) To bring the U.S. closer to mainstream global thinking on such issues as climate change and multilateralism
2) To end the Iraq war and move the war into Al Qaeda territory, Afghanistan.
3) Complete international nuclear disarmament.
4) Fixing the largest economy in the world in light of the largest economic downturn in recent memory.
...among other things.

And the rules are clear: 'Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed scientific or literary accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.'

Based on their reason, that would effectively make the Nobel guys American voters wouldn't it. But seriously,
its a pretty weak reason. It would be better if they said: "There are no big names at the moment who are doing
anything significant for world peace...lets just go for the popular guy this month!".

Why should Nobel feel compelled to 'support' Obama's policies anyway? They can 'judge' it as is their role as
selectors to give awards but they shouldn't 'support'/'oppose'.
