Punting Costs

For those of us who earn our keep in either USD or GBP (The AUD-wage earners on the other hand, should be experiencing something
of a renaissance). Now that these two currencies have decided to morph themselves into something resembling bog paper,
has this unfortunate trend affected your punting habits in any way? Do you find yourself:

- Punting Less: The HKD or RMB is no longer as affordable as it once was. I spend more time thinking whether i should
check out a particular 141 WG.

- Punting Constant: Life goes on, punting is something i don't compromise on.

- Punting More: What better way to distract myself from the trauma of my currency's weakness than
to punt more to raise morale!

Less as my first visit was when the US$ was 2:1 to the £ which due to the peg meant HK WGs the most expensve ones ie 500 were £29 , now this is more like £40, with some of the cheaper ones at £20ish..

But its less to do with money I suppose more to do with the fact that I'm busier in HK and thus have less time and had been starved initially so 4-6 a day was normal.

Life is short very...

Do you play it online or in real time tournaments? I have a mate who
loves online hold'em and has made quite abit of money from it although
nothing in the region of a 600,000 HKD profit...that is wild.

you can play NL-holdem in HK and Macau. To hit the 600,000 mark though, you'd have to play 25/50; i'm guessing, which is hard to find in HK. So it's likely that finn plays in macau.

Also...the USD is pegged to HKD, which means you shouldn't be losing any value for your american dollar when punting in hk...the British pound, however, hasn't been fairing quite as well.

Tell me about it...i earn my keep in the once great GBP and i find myself wishing (for the
first time actually) that the EUR was adopted. I am hoping (and it is a rather futile hope)
that the GBP will return to respectable heights (against the other currencies) soon but
the facts don't point to any such recovery.

Australians all let us rejoice!

It sure is nice to see the little Aussie dollar getting right up there. I felt it most in two recent trips to Cambodia - the first was when the AUD was getting 0.62USD's and the second was up to 0.85 - made a huge difference! (for those that don't know, they use USD's in Cambodia)

I must admit that in todays uncertain times, I have to budget a varying dollar value into my mongering trips - when you're talking two or three weeks of mongering, even a 5% change in some exchange rates can mean a huge difference in the bottom line (and potentially put it outside of what I can afford!)

Ahh.. if only I could win the lotto...

Can't argue with that logic.   I now find myself having to budget in advance and taking into
consideration (GENUINE consideration of how much the GBP will continue to falter before my next punting trip)

Can't say i don't envy you AUD earners...and to be fair, its about time the AUD gained some weight in
the fx market. The GBP got too fat and is now on a serious diet against its will!

If any of you are frequent punters to China, go for hedging against RMB.
More effective for non-USD/HKD earners.

I regularly keep and exchange extra RMB in my RMB foreign accounts when I see the forex at favourable rate. I can save extra few HKD per every 100HKD. That;s give me quite a lot of savings the thousands of RMB I exchange. You can save at least 1 to 2 worth of session at the end of the day.
But it seems the bufffer is never enough....

Yeah, move over USA - I think we all know who will be the economic superpower in future years... China is taking over!

As long as they stay friendly with Oz, I'll be happy!

But from the man-on-the-street view, i wouldn't want my salary to be in RMB. China may
very well become the next economic order but it is premised mainly on production and
export hence, when it eventually dominates the global economy, it will be one where
the RMB will be kept relatively weak to maintain its macro prosperity.

The US and the West in general are still have a very strong consumer culture and such
culture will not change in the near future as it is quite entrenched in the way of life.
China will continue to sell and the US will continue to buy. To keep the US buying, the
RMB has to be kept to an attractively low level with regard to the Dollar.

Thats good for us as well actually, punting will be affordable (so in that way, we keep
buying as well ). Problem is, the Western Currencies can't shoot to stay alive
these days, hence the budgeting.

I do not understand why the euro is so strong.  It appears more like the USD is weak than anything else, probably because of all of the spending the government is planning on doing.  It is not like France, Italy, Spain, Poland, etc have really strong economies that innovate and create wealth, at least last time I checked.  On the other hand, so many people have bought dollars that probably do not want them anymore, such as the Chinese government, that there will be a lot of transfer into other currencies.

If only I get paid in gold bars/coins, my earnings would have skyrocketted.

I would upgrade to punting 2 WGs at a time.
