Are you trying to use a sim card from china on your Iphone? if so it all depends if your phone is unlock or not. I know a Iphone that works with a sim card from HK, it will work in china.

your sim card needs to be able to have roaming to work in china.  i have a hk card that does not have roaming...it only works in hk...to get the type that has roaming i believe it is more expensive monthly.

Like bro Raptor says, as long as your iPhone is unlocked (free to use any network) then you'll be able to use it anywhere, even SZ. As for the sim card issue, if you are roaming then you'll have to check with your network provider first. I personally wouldn't recommend roaming (unless you're staying for a short time or this is a one off trip). If you or anyone else is planning to come to China-side often then I would fully recommend a Dual number sim card.

What these dual number sim cards are basically a sim card with BOTH a HK number and a China number, so it'll work in both sides. Best thing is if someone calls the HK number, and you in China, it'll ring like you're in HK. So nobaody has to know you're in China!!! Whenever I go to China, I divert my Main HK number to my Dual number sim card's HK number. So when people call, I just say I've gone out to HK Island or somewhere far away in HK
Now, the cost of these sim cards do vary. You can get them from China Mobile for RMB100 or you can get 'better numbers' from various convenience stores but they'll cost anywhere from RMB130 - 3xx.

Hope this helps!

Just remember you cannot use 3G service in China just yet.

That said, China Unicom sells the iPhone now but unsure where the 3G network is up and running in all parts of China.

Yup. Thats what i use when i am in HK and China. Besides the obvious advantage of making your whereabouts untraceable, it
saves me the hassle of having 2 separate sim cards for HK and China and having to change them around depending on my
location. Also, i don't have to keep track of the balances of 2 sim cards and with the dual number sim, recharge cards are
easily available in both HK and China (its offered by China Mobile).

However, it has been reported before that this dual sim card is not the most cost effective with quite unfavourable rates.
I was exploring the possibility of getting a dual sim card attachment for my phone that would allow me to put both a HK
sim and a separate China sim. All i will have to do this is press a button to switch between the networks.

I am not sure whether such an attachment would be iphone compatible though.

Hey DD, yes the cost of the dual numbered sims may not be the cost effective (getting a local China sim will be cheapest) but like you said, its the 'untracability' that's the beauty of it. Though you have to be careful to get a card that 'belongs' to the SZ area. My friend bought a sim that was registered to another outter area and every time he made calls his credit ran out real quick

If one is to get a China sim then I think the iPhone may not be best in this situation. Their are loads of phones that offer dual sim entry. That is that they can take two sims at the same time. There's TWO call buttons on the phone and depending on which sim you wanna make a call from, just press the relevant call button! Pretty sure Samsung are the only company to have released the only dual sim 3G phone. There are plenty of Chinese makes that have the function but minus the 3G capabilities.

Hey Bro Yoneyama,

How much can i get the Samsung dual sim 3G phone second hand in HK? Does the phone
come sim-unlocked (so that i can use it back home as well)?

The 2-in-1 HK/China sim card still does it for me at the moment. Too bad they don't have
a HK/China/Macau 3-in-1

Not sure how much it would be 2nd hand but i'm 99% certain it'll be sim unlocked so will be safe to use in UK.
Yeah it's a shame they don't have a 3-in-1 card fro Macau as well but standard HK cards should be ok for Macau. Obviously a little inconvenient for tourists.
