Slightly cheaper and maybe faster depending on the interchange at Tung Chung, but you can take the MTR Tung Chung Line from Kowloon station to Tung Chung for $13.5 (octopus) or $15.5 (ticket) and then ...
a corollary to this is the following, take the Tung Chung Line from say Kowloon Station to Tung Chung for $15.5 (single journey ticket), then walk over to the Novotel Hotel (1 or 2 minute walk), then pretend you're a hotel guest at the Novotel and take their free shuttle bus to the airport.
That's how this cheap bastard used to get from downtown Manhattan New York to the Newark, New Jersey USA airport - take the PATH train to Penn Station in Newark, then take Gateway Hilton bus to the airport. Those were the days before they built an Amtrak line right into the airport. No one ever asked me if I was a guest or not.
