The Shopping at the Yue Hwa Chinese Emporium Excuse

Did you know that the last Yue Hwa Chinese Emporium store left in HK is the one that is in on the intersection of Jordan Road and Nathan Road, Jordan?  Standing outside this store, one can see Sands Sauna across the street and K-Pressure and Temple Street Sauna are a just a few blocks away.

So what is the significance of the Yue Hwa Chinese Emporium, you say?  Well to the many overseas Chinese guys who reside in HK, we eventually have to go home and visit the relatives.  Most relatives always ask us to buy things like Chinese-branded underwear for the elderly, Chinese down comforters, Chinese branded medicine, handicrafts and so on for their behalf.  And we always had to go to a Yue Hwa Chinese Emporium because there is no where else that sells most of these stuff.  Thankfully for us HK island types, the 2nd-to-last Yue Hwa store closed for good in Central.

Now we have a great excuse to explain to our SOs why we have to go to Jordan.  It also makes a great excuse for those who are visiting HK with families.  Need to make an errand for the relatives. And Yue Hwa Chinese Emporium is not a chic, modern store most visiting families want to visit in the first place except to help out granddad.  These families would rather go to the modern giant malls.

The best way to take advantage of this place is to go buy what you have to buy first at the emporium, then leave the goods with the cashier for later pickup (not too late as they do close at about 9.30pm) after mongering as it would look silly to be carrying alot of those Yue Hwa bags to K-Pressure.

What will we think of next? Besides this excuse, what other loopholes have you found? Please enlighten us?

You could say the same for Kowloon/New Territories dwellers going to Sogo in Causeway Bay. Knocking off a few hours at GFS

living in SZ, I went over to partake with an WG by telling the SO that I was going over to Ladies Market. (decided to go visit a HG in TST instead while on the KCR).

However, a better excuse if you're living in HK would be to tell the SO that you're going to SZ to go shopping at the SZ Commercial Centre (at the Luohu Train Station), then walking the two blocks to the pink buildings for some fun.  That's a safer excuse because the chances of running into a spy or someone you know would be a lot less.

not to mention that the popular buildings NLH and NC are across the street.

For those who live and work on HK Island, most of us have SO's who also live and work on HK Island too.  So crossing the harbour to Kowloon is considered a day trip to the Unknown.  I have more a chance of being seen going into GFS in CWB by someone or spy than hanging around the Jordan area.

And going to SZ for an errand really pricks up the SO's ears to possible suspicious behavior of bf/hubby.  Unless of course it is for business.

I do a lot of photography, and my excuse is hitting the second hand camera stores on Kimberly Road, as this is near to some of my TST regulars.

One excuse, especially those interested in video gaming, music or movies....is going to Sino Centre (Shun Wo) in Mong Kok where right across is 37D and Portland Street.

Sino Centre is not what it used to be back in its heyday 5-10 years ago.  Back then, it was paradise for getting bootlegs and Cat 4 movies.  Nowadays, everything looks to be on the up and up, though I'm sure some boots still exist.  Golden Centre in Shamsuipo is still the granddaddy, but quite frankly I can get everything I need for cheaper in SZ Commercial Centre at the Luohu border crossing.

I wonder how many of the snobby people who shop a couple of doors down at the Mira know what's going on in the immediate neighborhood?

I always get confused by the whole Block A and Block B part of Champagne Court.
Always need to walk around and check the 141 site on my mobile to make sure.

Finding addresses in HK is so easy, just use the www.centamap.com.  It is a map guide compiled by a HK real estate agency so building outlines and all addresses are accurate.  It is in Chinese and English which makes it useful to print out and show to taxi drivers or to others when asking for directions.  It is many times better than Google maps.  Just select english then type in the address you want to go to and the site will direct you to the address.
