Bullshit Meter

ahem....I am fairly new to this site, under 1 month at this point.  So it might not be my place to give such suggestions.

but I humbly ask the head honchos of these forums to add a Bullshit Meter that anyone can use on certain posts.

I  understand there is already an acceptance function included, but its in my opinion that acceptance is just that,
how well you accept the poster opinion or gift of gab.

While karma is..again in my opinion, the older bro's way of rewarding newbies if they do things that are helpful to
the forum/community at large, and to punish those for damaging the forum or utterly stupid use of cyberspace.
IE: well thought out questions, reviews, pictures, heck even opinions(good/bad as long as there is thought involved)..all good
   : the bad, spam, stupid questions (yes i know they taught you in school there are no stupid questions, but trust me kiddies there ARE stupid questions)
    and pointless space wasting, time wasting, braincell wasting, carpel-tunnel causing posts that don't say anything.

what I'm suggesting is a meter that we can use if we feel a particular piece of literature is someone bullshitting us
or flat out lies.

sorry if I seem a bit ranty, this was caused by some recent posts.

Yeah, you are not alone.

Not sure if we need a BS meter, if you challenge a post as BS that's already strongly critiquing the poster's credibility, pretty much like challenging the Bro to a duel.

Until (IF) admin change system anyone is free to rate "BS ......", e.g. K/A = -5,  "BS phoney report" (I have already done this).  However I think it fair for Bros to always give their reason if they hand out a "BS" rating.

Perhaps, my experience is lacking in this forum also, but I thought there already is such a method for bullshit stuff that the moderators use.  It's the negative acceptance points that are given out for those who post really dumb stuff.  I've seen it often when the posting is just plain inappropriate.  There may not be a need for a BS meter when the negative points already addresses this matter.

It won't work!

Bullshit Meter will not work! Who are we to judge the punter's own experience and his own words? Who will be the Authority to regulate and verify what is the truths and lies? The only way to prove whether the punter is telling fact or friction is to have the same sexual experience oneself which is very remote chance of happening.

Why not give the person who post the benefit of doubt. Why must we penalize the story teller. Just consider his/her post as reading material, everything and all else will be peace and quiet. I mean, he is not advising you to invest 1 million dollars. If you were to follow his/her advise to punt, the only thing you could possibly loose is some money and time. No harm done.

Just my 2 cents worth!

Reply #4 waikeekee's post

I agree in principal, but we are adults with questioning minds, why should we accept any post as the truth if we don't agree? Benefit of the doubt is admirable, but if a Bro strongly disagrees and can give cause, why not challenge? In one sense we are obliged to do so.

It is why the "BS" accuser should explain themselves which allows for the accepted practice of right of reply. It's hard to defend yourself unless the accuser explains why they have raised the matter. IMO any member should be able to challenge credibility with due cause, but they need to back up their claims. If they don't/can't, they risk a worse fate than the intended "victim".

Use "Acceptance" and make a comment about bullshit.

But do be tactful.  Sometimes what seems like bullshit is just a badly-written post.  No harm in sharing your Acceptance though, plus or minus, helps people to sharpen their act.

Hi All;

I am a newbie, in fact very new. I have not contributed anything yet. I am looking forward to do my part. In this post, I would like to add the following:

1. If the reader don't believe what is posted, the reader should just move on!
2. Why are all of us concern of the points? Is it exchangeable for a voucher for a Free-Bonk at one of the Apartments?
3. Let the Moderators do their job. I am sure the MODs know nore than anyone of us punter, readers and mongerers.
4. Why would someone waste time posting something which is easily discovered as fake? What has this world come to?
5. He or she who post a long and nice story/report, we should at least show some appreciation for time and effort put into it.

Hi All;

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.  ...

Yeah you obviously ARE really new!

Welcome - it's people who take the trouble to speak up like you who make this forum.

Which brings up your point 3. - the mods are just people who signed up like you and me - guys who care about the forum.  They rely on all of us to keep the forum as good as it is.

and your point 4. the issue is some people DO fake reports, either to gain reading access, or to boost their ego, or some other bizarre reason, but they do

so to your point 1. the reality is the quality of information here is outstanding, which means the readers DO believe what is written, which in turn means any false information is doubly harmful: harmful to the reader, and it destroys the value created by the honest posters who worked hard to make it useful

Obviously point 1 and 3 combined means your point 2 - we should all be concerned.  Who wants to read useless drivel?  Hey bro: why are you here?  Obviously because you recognise the quality of what you've seen here (duh).

So your point 5 - at last I agree something you said! - yes we greatly appreciate any kind of contribution.  Stories, report, even fake reports - just make sure they're posted in the right place, and make clear what is fact, what is fiction, and what's just an opinion.

Look forward to your contribution bro!!!

Yoah! Bro;

I always say, give the guy a break! He is new afterall. Ironically, for a newbie, what he said carried a bit of truth. I guess, he is trying to be Honest but he is still a crook,,heeheee.

If a guy come into the forum with fake and superficial reports, I am sure senior brother like you will smell a rat very fast. You and the Moderaters will definately put your foot down or even use a sledge hammer on that guy who gives false info.

Haha,,why don't you take the very HonestCrook under your wing and educate him on the do's and don'ts in this forum. You are a grand master who is capable to have a disciple.

I personally don't like it, unless it's proven that he has bullshitted.  If he hasn't, then it may be very insulting.  As one of the others has said, why not simply write "bs" in the acceptance and express your dissatisfaction that way.

Dear DArtagnan;

Thanks for the welcome. I am just expressing my opinion. OIC, I actually thought the Moderators here are employees and owners of this very forum/website. My mistake, sorry! I always wanted to write a field report (FR) but had a feel of "inferior complex" as the walk-up's I frequent are in the lower of classes. So, nothing good can come from it if I write about them. Compared the hottie I read and sometimes see, the WG's I visit look like their mothers, so I just read on and moved on.

I was actually encouraged by bro waikeekee and other senior brother after reading his SZ-Hooker Alley thread to post opinions and how to behave ethically and with courtesy. Till now, I still do not get it? Why on earth would someone brag about something in here that is false, worst is, if someone actually follow his instructions and directions, harm will be incurred. So, please comment or tell me if I had done anything wrong, I thank you first.

Cheers

welcome honestcrook:

the reason someone would brag/post false report is so he can gain karma/credit,
the forums are set up so that only people with high credit/karma can see certain things.

But that is not the only reason.  there exists people in this world who has problems with
coping with real life. and the internet is their escape.  Seeking to find respect that they
lack in real life they lie or exaggerate things about their REAL lives.  And since this is a
forum on punting, their lies tend to gravitate towards that direction.

btw: it is ok to not write a FR (but i'm interested in even bad experiences, helps to know what to avoid),
do what the newbie guide says, ask well thought out questions (that can't answered by a simple search),
just be a part of the community or tell some good jokes (like they say, we all need a good laugh)

Bottom line, this is a community and if you don't actively contribute and help it grow, at least don't
damage it.

DA is right. I've gotten burned a few times when I've been vocal about a report actually being an advertisement, and while I was right one time, I wasn't on other occasions.

Our forum is a global phenomenon that attracts members from everywhere. Often we have members trying to cobble together reports in English without a good working knowledge of the language. It's easy to make mistakes under these circumstances.

On a UK based forum, I am not a Mod anymore since moving away, but still have access to the facilities. One thing I introduced in the Mod room was a dodgy posters thread where if one of us thought someone was being a plank, rude, advertising, or bullshitting, the rest would know to keep an eye on him.

By the way, I seem to recognise Honestcrooks avatar. Didn't that sonic character have a toys out the pram tantrum recently and leave vowing never to come back?

Hello Senior Brother akka;

Thank you for noticing me. By the way, I am honestcrook not plural as in honestcrooks, don't you think 1 crook is enough? I didn't know an avatar will arouse your suspicion. What are you talking about? You lost me here? Please advise? For your information, I am just a newbie trying to learn and contribute. Please lower your guard and time will tell.

I think you have misread what Dartagnan said, he was not critical of Honestcrook, but kindly  took the time to answer HC's questions. DT said "Who wants to read useless drivel?" but this was not directed at HC's post, it was getting to the point of why the Forum members have certain standards and discourage certain posts.

Try reading Post#8 again and you will see DT is quite supportive and welcoming.

HC, yes mods are just volunteers .... yes with power to smack, and to applaud, but all senior members do too, and collectively try to keep the Forum running smoothly. You have got it right, ethical and honest behaviour is appreciated, it's one of the fundamentals to gaining respect.

You ask; "Why on earth would someone brag about something in here that is false ......".  That is a relatively rare event considering all the traffic, although we do get spikes from time to time. I have reflected before that we should petition our Governments to stop the patients in the asylums from accessing the internet.  Anyway, fact is some people feel compelled to, IMO borderline personality disorder or worse.    A common descriptor is "troll", but this will also include people who flame, and purposely try to BS and provoke the Forum.

[for the Startrek fans] As Spock would say to a troll; "It is logical to assume that if you face ten angry men in a deserted alley, you will encounter much pain and suffering."  Well the Forum is anonymous so a troll won't have to face a physical beating, but they can face humiliation, a beating in the virtual sense.

As Spock would say to all Bros who contribute positively:   "Live long and prosper".....
