Browsing History - How to delete?

Anybody knows a way to delete browsing history completely and permanently from the computer?

Best way IMO is simply to use Google Chrome as your browser, and use its built-in 'incognito' function.

But Mars adds a very smart way to configure Firefox to do the same thing.

Whatever your browser is using, you should be able to bring up the history, and to clear it entirely - but exactly how depends on which browser you're using.

Beware though - if you are at work, clearing your computer is NOT a way to hide your tracks.
If you're browsing at work, you need to know that the internet connection monitored by the IT team is logging every single site you visit, and it is traced it back to you - there's nothing you can do to stop or avoid it.

if you must browse at work, use vtunnel.  It will encrypt the site from history, from IT prying eyes, etc.  That's how I was able to work with this site the last couple of weeks while staying in China as well.

There are programs that you download that will clean up your computer. Some of them you have to pay but thats the only way to clean your computer with military grade cleanup.

I heard from a forensic guy the only way to clean a hard-disk is to hammer nails through it and throw it into the harbour.

Apparently even after it's been low-level formatted seven times over (i.e. new data written and then erased from every single sector) they can still recover deleted data.

Scary shit ...

Bro, if you're not in IT yourself get yourself some friends in IT who will spill the beans.

Fact is your traces can probably be found - the more important question is does anyone care at all, or are all the senior management doing the same thing?

These days employers are hyper-sensitive to where their staff are surfing, and routers record huge amounts of data that goes through them.  Stories about piracy, file-sharing, hacking, etc. abound.  They all serve to make it harder for an honest punter to go about out his business in peace ...

I don't specifically know about vtunnel, but if I was an IT manager (as I once was) I could see myself monitoring traffic to encryption sites and paying more attention to people who show suspicious behaviour (like covering their tracks).  It's one thing to do something that everyone else is doing, just make sure you're not attracting attention by being the only one.

If I'm making you paranoid, at least you'll be more alert to early warning signs, and become less likely to face embarrassing questions.

FireFox 3.5 now has an option under 'Tools' called 'Start Private Browsing' that does the same thing as the incognito function in the Google Chrome browser. And if I'm not mistaken, IE 8 also allows this.

Also, you can configure FireFox to automatically delete all cookies, browsing history, etc. every time you close your browser. Click 'Tools' in the FireFox toolbar and then choose 'Options'. Under the 'Privacy' tab, put a check before 'Clear history when FireFox closes'. Now every time you close FireFox all of the items you selected in the 'Tools/Clear recent history' window will be automatically deleted.

Bear in mind that most web-based proxies only disguise ip addresses - they don't really encrypt the data transmitted between your computer and the website you're viewing. In which case, any good IT guy monitoring web usage could still see anything the shows up on your screen. In order to encrypt data between you and the proxy your connecting through, you would need to install some encrypting/decrypting software on the computer you're using. I think products like Anonymizer Total Net Shield do this. But as DArtagnan says, encrypted traffic would raise suspicions with the IT people.

Ie8 does have private browsing, but this only hides what you are doing from casual users checking your history. IT guys (who often tell their bosses how things can't be done) are great at finding the unfindable and checking the uncheckable.

Your best bet is to surf from your phone or connect through mobile broadband on a laptop or pda, and completely bypass your company's internet gateway

I agree with Jyeung. If anything, and you need a fix quickly, get a smart phone or an ipod touch that can surf wirelessly. The mobile version of this site can be used just as well as the computer although just a bit slower.

But if you use wifi you'll still need to go through your company's gateway.

You can get the PCCW "Pocket Wifi" to keep things secure

You can find access to PCCW's wifi from most offices.

But not as convenient as an unlimited-data plan on 3G and a smartphone with a full browser.

You CAN use the mobile version of the site, but IMO it's only really any use for last-minute confirmation of an address or phone number - since it shows the profiles one by one it's pretty hopeless for rapidly scanning a district and picking out a short-list.
