another very effective scam relates to names we know and trust. It could be a bank, eBay, Facebook, Paypal etc. You will get an email from them that appears totally official. It will direct you to a website that looks totally official. You will be asked to update your password and log in details for security reasons... again, seems so very legit. As you will expect, what you are actually doing is sending the scammer your details via a "facade" web page.

Warning: Legitimate businesses never ask you to do things this way.

look out for 2 things... the email address that the message is sent to you from, ie. if it's something like:

[email protected] or
[email protected]

etc it is a scam.

I know of Mitnick from several different sources, all random and unconnected (attorneys, hacker world, etc.) to each other. He's a true piece of work. Last I heard, he was giving computer security seminars to Colombian "businessmen" at some outrageous daily fee. Hope the nice folks there got their money's worth.

What I found most interesting about him is that his forte is phones..and I don't think he's doing a lot of security work in that area, but it's been a while.

I'll add more later, but I just want to put this in play:

Any "prize" that is given only exists as a result of people doing something that is, on aggregate, more valuable than the prize being given out.  Lotteries pay out millions, but collect tensof millions.   Contests give away a car or a trip, but collection valuable data on consumers at an incredibly high rate, which has more value than the prize.   Basically, most prize giveawaysare designed to obtain income, information, or to get a consumer to perform an act / make a purchase / visit a store that they otherwise would not do.

Emails that say "you won millions" are always scams because they fail that simple test.  You have done nothing to merit the prize.   You have not fulfilled your part of the bargain, so there is no way that the prize can exist.

More later.  But start with simple logic and the rest is simple.

feel free to add anything that contributes to this particular canon, as scams are everywhere--they can be Net-based but the real masters like Mitnick use ALL types of methods to compile a profile. so when the hammer comes down, the phone call/email you'll get will be so beliebable you will never guess that you are about to have everything stripped from you.

Ars Technica has a breathtaking example of hackers from Anonymous getting root-access to a firm's server (hint: this is the WORST thing that can happen) by posing as a co-CEO of the firm. it's two pages, but the second page has the actual emails...it is a bit technical so if u get a bit confused, just skim. the insanely BRILLIANT/TERRIFYING stuff happens on the second page:

briefly, the firm in question was trying to get fat USgov contracts by promising to plant fake WikiLeaks documents, that's why they were targeted. the firm, HBGary, was essentially destroyed by Anonymous. AT has other articles on this saga, but read the above article. you'll never be targeted by people this skilled, but it shows you what CAN be done.

There are many different breeds of parasites in Vegas...my favorite is the so-called "VIP Host", who is some guy who basically knows a limo driver and maybe people who are managers at clubs. Even you don't have to know the management to get in.

He charges some stupid fee, $200-$500 to do stuff for you that you could have done yourself (book limo, negotiate table and drink minimum at the club)it not being so lazy.  Then you are supposed to tip him on top of it.

There's no magic to getting into a popular club-you just want to walk in and cut through the line...have a $20 ready for the doorman and look presentable. Bottle service is always negotiable, and the deal is usually better the night you want to come in-trust me there's always a table available for a guy willing to promise to spend $500 or more.

Now, if you have that kind of dough to blow..well, then maybe it works for you, and there are a couple of guys who are truly pros. But most are a joke and a fraud. Speaking of pimping..let me pimp this site for y'all. Gives excellent advice for the Vegas clubber.

the only time off is during the christmas period and made a trip over to hk to escape the heat in oz and wanted some r&r with local company

during that time, my regular WG's were away on annual leave as well?!?

As for EXIF data on images, there is a whole big deal here that could be getting bigger as we go on.   Cell phones are tracking you (IPhone and android for sure), not only with GPS but also by triangulating various wireless devices, cell towers, and wi-fi connections.  If you have GPS enabled (and many do for at least some functions), your images may be tagged with location information.  Already, they are tagged with time, which can be an issue.

Paladin:  VIP hosts come in a few different flavors.  The sucky ones just have their hands out for your money, over charge you, use their expensive friends that are kicking them back cash, etc.  The good ones are incredible people who can open any door at any time, can score the tickets you want, can get you the right table for the right game, get the dealers switched if you like, and so on.  They of course can arrange your room for you, keep a hotel limo for you on standby, and even arrange air travel by private jet if you are on the west coast.  If you roll high enough, they can make your day

Am no longer familiar with Las Vegas hosts as I'm no longer a big gambler there as its just too far away.  But I do remember going back eons ago the Caesar's guide was stellar and arranged not only accomodation/food/drinks and flights from Hong Kong to LV - but also to New York where I had some business to take care of.  And even extended credit to me then - something which I believe no longer happens.

On Chang Ping guides, there are of course good ones, bad ones and mediocre ones like in all professions. Their main source of in come is the kick-back given by the KTV managers etc, and depending on the volume they are able to come up with, such kick-backs can vary from 3% to as high as 20%.

What you gotta watch out for is those guys who pretend as if they're just arranging KTV parties as a favour without coming out clean as to what they actually are. Then there are those who would charge a supposed fixed fee for all you can drink that night (i.e. RMB 250 for beer, 300 for white wine, 350 for red, 450 for hard liquor etc) and then smuggle in to the KTV room their own bootleg/fake liquor which has been known to make some guys really ill.  Like I said, they come in all shades!!

Well, if that is the case, then of course you're gonna get slimpickings - anywhere outside of PI - during Christmas.  You see, Christmas is a BIG thing in PI - and most of these gals will go back to their families and back to being good Catholic gals during Yuletide.  But as far as other ntionalities i.e. Thai, Vietnamese, PRC, I THINK that they'd be out in force like during any other season - EXCEPT during Chinese New year - when most locals as well as those who also celebrate the Lunar New year -will lay down tools.

one other thing I want to add, NEVER ever log in to anything via a link provided in an email. If you get an email you believe is legit, simply go to the actual web page and log in that way... NEVER "click on the link embedded in the email" to navigate to the web site... it may not be "the" website.

Glad to know that except for Chinese New Year, the PRC ladies will be around the rest of the year. In HK, I really enjoy the PRC HGs and (so far) 1 really hot KG. the "short links" (tiny.url and bit.ly) are convenient, esp when using Twitter. what they do is take a long URL and use a shorter one which redirects to the orig.

sadly, like many useful things, it can be turned to evil: the tiny.url actually links to a phishing site. for this reason, as TT suggests, ALWAYS check your URL in the small strip at the top of your browser to make sure you're going where u supposed to. say for example it reads "http://www.case 84759568789DF99.trouble.paypal.com," and there's a big WARNING saying yr PayPal acct and u need to click RIGHT NOW to save your balance.wow, that wasn't what you were expecting?

well, check the URL. it's so wrong...plus PayPal doesn't send out these nonsense-warnings anyway. this is a classic phish. someone's hiding behind a shortened URL.

if you KNOW the person listing the shortened URL, and where it ought to go, there's seldom a problem. TT uses "LINK HERE" and underlines it, and it goes to another part of this board. the process is known, and anything unusual will be noticed right away. very low risk of compromise, as TT is doing it right. and as he also mentions, the links embedded in emails are the ones to watch.

always, if anything seems out of place, check the URL toolbar. i've seen some of the fake "bank" sites and u will NOT be able to tell them from the real ones. although some have spelling/grammar or other style-mistakes...

Got a question for you.

We HAD a short period of time when the comment field when "rating" was expanded to 140 characters. I've now noticed that it has been brought back down again - and I suspect its because like Twice said (when replying to my querie as to why Newbies were totallly banned from rating) , its because Spammers etc were using this comment field to SPAM/FLOOD/HIDDEN LINKS etc.

Is there ANY way to NOT allow links in the comment field?

hmm.. how if it was possible to censor certain words in the comments field like .com .net .org ? It may be able to help in curbing the comment spam that is occurring.

alternatively, how about disabling the customized comments in ratings for n00bies, so that they only be able to select the preset comments and cannot spam with their own messages.
after a user reaches a level above n00b, the customized rating is 'unlocked' and user can write custom comments normally as now.

This isn't a review but more like a scouting report. I'm not in hong kong that often soit's better to write these things down while it's still fresh in my head.

My bucket list thus far has been a bust. I met up with an old girlfriend to hang out with but then she decided not to leave my side, thus limiting my mongering time. I have blisters on my feet from walking everywhere and doing the tourist thing. They hurt.i'm thinking of getting a foot massage if only to temporarily ease the pain. I've neverhad any paid massage without the happy ending and feel weird not getting it haha.

Streetwalkers do have a certain appeal to me though. I have no idea if i would actually say yes to one but that's only becausd of their reputation for poor service. Nothing along mody road so i went to that park beside The regal kowloon hotel and sat down to rest my weary legs and blistered feet. Within a few minutes i get the eye from a mamasan. She looks mid 40s and while i wouldn't mind banging her she is not my first choice. I check the three girls she's towing behind and none of them strike my fancy though i could if made to choose. I like themthin and all were medium built. No one was exceptionally attractive either.

She eyes me and i eye her. I decide to keep an eye on them in case i change my mind. In the corners of the plaza are club paris, bboss and Another sauna i  don't remember. maybe i should try one of those.

On the opposite side and near the regal kowloon entrance are four more streetwalkers but they're not dressed to make it obvious. Also they have a guy with them -- a pimp perhaps?  I didnt think they were WGs anymore.

At this point it had been drizzling a bit for a while. Mamasan crossed my path again and finally i take action. She speaks to me in mandarin and i have no idea what she is saying. I tell her so in cantonese and she switches. We actually only talk about the weather. I don't know the hong kong laws regarding communicating with a streetwalker. Anyways her harem has now joined the other ladies by the RK hotel. 8 streetwalkers total!  The male dude is still with them and i still have no idea whT he does.

I call it a night at 11:30 and head back to write this up. I'll try again tomorrow but i dont imagine much happening on a sunday.
