7 years and you've still got this in your consciousness.

Thus whilst these kind of things ARE usually just best to forget about - they nonetheless remain within ourselves.  Like or not, the unknown (as in anonymous texts etc) does strike the greatest fear.

I've been quite lucky in that I've not met with death threats etc as I KNOW that I could get pretty offensive in my time - as I would guess most of us CAN be!

But your post does remind me (and I hope others here too) that it's most times best to keep a low-profile-nice-guy demeanour when on an anonymous board such as this.

Another good topic - the kinder gentler face of 141!!  Let it prevail and prevail long!!

SEAJ
Ps edit - come to think of it - what did the Red ant say about this? The SMS was sent via her phone so she MUST KNOW who it was.  And in fact, whoever the guy was - he must be an idiot to have used her phone to send off such a text

Jack, thanks for this...I've never really had any problem entering Thailand, actually, I would get to use the VIP lane, coming in flying business class (my peeps in BKK tell me this is ok).

I've yet to fly into the new airport, but never had a problem at Don Muang. Nothing even close to it.

BTW, is it true there some serious lack of toilets at the airport? When I get off a flight first thing I do is take a leak-it's like habit.

I have some very good friends who were subcontractors for the airport. I'd prefer not to say what goods/services they provided as to not identify them.

I remember the daughter, whom I call "sister", talking to me how she had to go to the airport and deliver the bribe. Of course, my mock stage whisper "the bribe"? got the entire office rolling on the floor. That started an impromptu monologue about "you mean, there's corruption in Thailand? Thailand? " I was asked to stop lest people would actually have seizures from laughing so loud.

The Thai government is too stupid to realize that the airport is the first impression people have of Thailand, and the corruption was evident from the get go. So bad, they had to reopen Don Muang for a while while they straightened things out. Apparently having a license to steal wasn't enough for those awarded contractor-sounded like out and out looting from what "sis" told me.

Unfortunately though - its not only Thailand with this problem of corruption.

I started out my professional life in the West and in Hong Kong - and when I had to start doing business in various SE Asia countries and China, I really was out of my depth and really didn't know how ANYBODY could do business in these countries (but  guess it's also the same in other 2nd and 3rd world countries around the world).

Whilst I will still not be directly involved with all these shenanigans, the fact of the matter is that one does need to be able to navigate through all this if one is going to do ANY business at all here.  From dealing with the very lowest to the very highest, its pretty well par for the course that one must have an open mind; and thus nowadays I just allow my agents/counterparties/staff to deal with the intricacies - for indeed it is only locals who can successfully navigate such shark infested waters.  (yeah yeah yeah - I can hear some of you saying - how does that make it right, how do you justify it??  Well, all I can say is for YOU to actually try to do business in these countries.)

But it really is a pity that there is so much corruption as I KNOW that it really drags everthing down - the people's morale, their general standard of living and most tragic of all, their morality.  Pity

SEAJ
Ps edit - to explain my rating of your post Paladin - a favorite refrain from the WG's in Bangkok about the Suvarnabhumi airport is that it actually should be pronounced - "So, you wanna Boom-Boom?"

lotta variety in these posts!

first of all: i'm certain the SMS was sent by some guy besotted by the Ant who grabbed her phone while she was in the shower or something. she probably did not know about it (i assume he deleted it after he sent it) or she would have mentioned it...unless she was just too ashamed or embarrassed. if she did find about it of course she knew who it was...but whoever it was literally just came and went. it cd have been a prank, but it had a nasty edge to it.

she was always working at a strip club, so it was just-some-guy. at the time there were rumors that you could hire a hitman in LOS for a few thousand baht, of course the mainstream media loves this type of skank, but at that time u ran into this "bargain-priced-assassin" urban legend everywhere. so the SMS-guy was just triangulating the most base Bangkok info and figured it'd terrify me. i just waited until she called me...it was an ordeal biding my time, u know, of course there's only ONE available woman in Bangkok, and if i even thought about her magic bullets would riddle my body! eeek!

and i wrote it down, along with some other SMSs. have a little file of verbatim missives...while the big stuff does stick in my consciousness, can't take credit for the details.

@ p310: you've NEVER BEEN to Cobra Swamp? it's been the international airport for Bangkok since its opening in 2006. took awhile: "as early as 1968, critics were already charging that the project was "five to seven years" behind the main schedule"...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suvarnabhumi_Airport

these two paragraphs speak volumes about Thailand:
"The airport was due to open in late 2005, but a series of budget overruns, construction flaws, and allegations of corruption plagued the project.

A further problem was the belief that the airport was haunted by spirits, and sightings of ghosts by superstitious construction workers, so that on 23 September 2005, the Thai airports authority held a ceremony with 99 Buddhist monks chanting prayers to calm these spirits."

then again, so do these two:
"Petty thieves and confidence men, the majority of them illegal taxi drivers or tour guides, are known to prey on tourists in the arrival hall. They belong to politically-well connected criminal groups: Kamnan Samruay, Boonruang Srisang, Sak Pakphanang, the Pattaya Mafia and Phuyai Daeng. Evicting them has proved difficult as they allegedly are well connected (the head of the Pirap gang is supposedly related to an AoT executive, while the Phuyai Daeng has ties to influential civil servants in Samut Prakan).

On October 1, 2010, two hundred armed men occupied the airport's parking area for an hour, blocking the building's entrances and seizing ticket booths to collect fares from motorists. Airport security personnel failed to respond, reportedly because an internal dispute within the Parking Management Co., the firm contracted to run the parking facilities." welcome to Thailand.

corruption is endemic in Asia, of course you have to pay a bit of "black money" sometimes or things will never happen. can it be there's corruption OUTSIDE of Asia? shocker!!

the prob with Thai corruption: it's not only slipshod, but admired. it's so entrenched that Thais figure if u have influence, you SHOULD wield it for financial gain. it cd be argued that this attitude helps create the environment where ripping off farang is not only OK, but admired. it's not so fundamentally different from winning big on a stock-sale, or at the racetrack, which are "OK" by Western standards.

but, u slip an envelope of red Maos into the right pocket, a project gets done. much Thai strong-arming HINDERS their efforts to improve the country, or even screws up already-built properties. like when they built that elevated-highway inthe early 90s--the day before it was scheduled to open, Thai interests declared they'd changed their minds and would be charging a different toll than agreed upon in the contract. their partners refused, so for nine months it sat empty, baking in the sun, while below, ordinary Thais waited for hours in traffic jams. there are other examples: the Hopewell train project, for example. self-foot-bullet-inflection seems built into the system, cuz it sure happens a lot. let's occupy the airport for 8 days, whee! dingbat party! oh gosh, Uncle Somchai's tourist business just failed!! why?

since you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing Asia's 5th busiest airport, p310, here's a(nother) taste:
"In 2009, Ireland warned its citizens to be on guard while browsing in the airport's shops. "We have received reports that innocent shoppers have been the subject of allegations of suspected theft and threatened that their cases will not be heard for several months unless they plead guilty and pay substantial fines," the Irish government wrote in a travel advisory, which also advised shoppers to retain all receipts to "avoid great distress."

Britain and Denmark also posted online advisories about hard-to-detect demarcation lines between shops in Suvarnabhumi's sprawling duty-free zone and warned shoppers to be alert about carrying unpaid merchandise across the lines."

"sprawling duty-free zone." heh. be sure to allow enough time to get to your departure gate (where NOTHING is for sale). it's curious how Thais can be so xenophobic and simultaneously worship "luxury" branded shite from Europe and elsewhere. think about that as yr hauling yr luggage past hundreds of meters of Ferragagucci shops with 5-6 employees in each, standing around chatting because there's nothing else to do.

another air-passenger who loathes Suwannapoom (and loves Don Muang)

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/to ... ut-1-hr-10-minutes/

Almost missed my flight today. Took around 70 minutes to get thru passport control.
Yep it sucked standing in line for 70 minutes.
I had to run to the gate.
Shitty airport is all I can say.........rather ridiculous.
Have been to 45 countries, so voice of experience talking here.
Why they they don't share International flights w/ good old Don Muang is a mystery....though not really.
Don Muang...........been in and out a gazillion times.............Never, ever one complaint...........
SuvarnaBOOM or howerever they pronounce it is a NIGHTNARE.
Corruption, corruption, corruption. It's the only reason Svarnabumi was built & the only reason Don Muang is out of the picture.
Incompetents and corruption........been here a long time,
Thailand's airports are the hub of incompetence and crony-ism.

You guys like my new sign off?

Guys - did you notice my new tri-color sign off?

Whaddya'll think of it - attention grabbing enuff?

And actually its kinda surprising that not many more newbies would be joining us here...especially since I've basically welcomed all of them when they post on the Introduce Yourself" thread.

But then again, I've also noticed that the VERY great majority of newbies would sign up to this forum, make one or 2 posts and then they'd dispappear. Perchance just to lurk about whilst keeping silent?

What's the fun in lurking about whilst NOT getting into the swing of things I truly wonder.

look forward to yr report

Stickman has been reporting of massive queues for Immigration, and of course, ppl will come up to u and whisper "want express service?" the idea being that u slip them a few baht and bingo, u go thru a special queue. but he also reported that some guys have GONE for the special treatment, only to find it STILL takes damn long!! this is what's infuriating about Thai corruption--it's as inefficient as everything else!!

go for a soapy, my lad--pick an old-school place on Soi Sri Ayutthaya or New Petchburi, the flash new places at Ratchada have great talent but if yr not on for the full-whack, not really worth the bahttage IMHO. if u simply want a CBJ, Lolita's on Soi 8 will accommodate u, they usually do BBBJ but won't object if u bring a nice thin condom that fits.

to enhance yr report, try the new Airport Express train into town:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suvarnabhumi_Airport_Link

aw gee, still some pillars in the way from the Hopewell failure:
"The line is built largely along the same alignment as the failed Bangkok Elevated Road and Train System (BERTS) project, started by Hopewell but stopped in 1997 when only 10% had been completed. Some BERTS pillars stood in the way of the new system, and after extensive debate on their suitability for reuse and demands for compensation from Hopewell, SRT decided to demolish the pillars and build new ones."

"extensive debate"...oh yes, no doubt:

Hopewell: u ripped us off massively, now compensate!
SRT: mai pen rai, fuck off.
Hopewell: here are the baht figures for the pillars we built. not to mention all the other money we spent.
SRT: mai pen rai, fuck off.
Hopewell: OK, 50 percent.
SRT: mai pen rai, fuck off.
Hopewell: 10 percent.
SRT: mai pen rai, fuck off.
Hopewell: a bottle of fake scotch and a blowjob.
SRT: mai pen rai, a six-pack of warm Chang and we'll let you jerk off in our executive bathroom.

Raring to go huh?  Just a few more hours to the Land of Smiles!

On something different - ask your friend to take you to the higher class clubs in Bangkok like Spasso's, Pegasus or Soprano house - presuming they're still there!  Yeah - its been that long ago since I've been back to Bangkok

These places are like night and day different from the Go-Go bars one normally associate with Bangkok and are surprisingly quite nice; none of that flip-flopped Euro-trash feel to them/quite cosmopolitan. And if those names above no longer exist - I'm very sure there will be others that has taken its place for the Hi-So (what an over-used and quite stupid expression) of Thailand!

Have fun and stay safe down there - too many scams and rip-offs in Bangkok these days.

Hunghom to Chang Ping in 92 minutes via Lowu

Today I made it to Chang Ping from Hung Hom MTR station in a record time of 92 minutes!!

Hunghom-Lowu = 41 minutes
Crossing Border = 20 minutes via the passport Channel plus time to buy duty free cigarettes.
Waiting for CRH train = 4 minutes
CRH train Lowu - Chang Ping = 27 minutes

Total time = 1 hour 32 minutes!!

If I had taken the direct train, the journey tijme would have been scheduled for 70 minutes but invariably, it would at least be 75-80 minutes PLUS I'd have to wait for the scheduled train AND spend 8 minutes prior to boarding to clear custmom etc and another 5 or so minutes to clear custom at the China side.  At least the same 92 minutes and I wouldn't have been able to leave whenever I wanted to leave/go by the Train schedule.

Just FYI if anybody is interested!!

The Lo Wu customs was always something I avoided in the past. Especially entering HK from China. I've waited several hours in line, promising myself I would never do it again. However over the last couple of years when circumstances have been such that I have had to go through Lo Wu, it has been much more efficient and better organised... no longer something to "fear".

Shenzhen Bay!

Do any of you guys go through Shenzhen Bay???

It is ideal for me as I live quite close, something funny happened to me there yesterday. I was dropping off my golf clubs for a friend so I thought I would have a quick drink with him etc before I came back to HK.

I popped over to a local butchers where I live, it is ran by a couple of Welsh women. I bought a couple of lovely breakfast baps (English style!!) I thought it would be a nice surprise for my friend as he always complains he misses them as he has been in China for a while now. So I had a bag with me as well as my golf clubs (and some tooling in my bag my friend was dropping off at a factory for me )

I walk through HK side with no problems, I get to the China side and I get stopped by a guard, asking to search my clubs, this has never happened to me before but I get a little worried as I have some expensive tooling in my bag!

He looks through all of my clubs asking where I am going etc etc - he then opens my bag, see's two big breakfast baps and takes one out, looks at it and then says:

"You cannot take these through!"

I can see this twats mouth watering at the prospect of eating these two delightful sandwiches! I thought FOOK THAT! So I take them out of my bag and ask "Why?"

"Because you cannot take food through!"

"OK" I say, then I begin to open one...

"What are you doing?" He shouts..

"I'm eating my fu**king sandwiches!"

He grabs one out of my hand, puts it in my bag then starts laughing at me. Then shoves me out of the door lol the SOAB! I called his bluff, my arse was twitching thinking I may of taken it too far! but hey! It was worth the risk!

My friend was over the moon when he saw me holding the sandwich, with a big bite out of the other one!

He did not notice all the tooling in my bag either

I can see this twats mouth watering at the prospect of eating these two delightful sandwiches! I thought FOOK THAT! So I take them out of my bag and ask "Why?"

SOLID GOLD! the perfect way to handle the situation. Petay, are you are Westerner? It's extremely rare for a Westerner to get hassled.

Raring to go huh?  Just a few more hours to the Land of Smiles!

On something different - ask your friend to take you to the higher class clubs in Bangkok like Spasso's, Pegasus or Soprano house - pre ...

Raring to go, arrived, last night went to soi cowboy, nana plaza, found nothing to my liking, the only person that caught my eye was a drop dead gorgeous lady boy at nana, skip.

Passed by Mango massage and Snow White earlier, both, bleh, plus the establishments seem a bit run down, not somewhere I would like to hang out and enjoy for a couple of hours, has China spoiled me? Maybe

Probably gonna go for some beers at nana and patpong later, probably not gonna take anything tonight as I will head to poseidon, nataree ratcha area tmrw afternoon.

Maybe head back to Mango massage later if I just can't resist!
