Please go to the FIRST page of this forum by clicking on "sex141 eForum" on the upper left corner of this page; you will be taken to the first page of the forum where you will see "new posts" on the upper RIGHT corner of the page.

Click on this and you will come to a page which lists out all the latest postings on this forum. Scan thru the list and open up these NEW AND FRESH topics of discussion - and you can then join in and contribute your knowledge, opinion, advise etc.  A nice and simple way to get into the swing of things here and one which will become second nature as far as being "involved" in the going-ons of this forum.

Please make sure that you then do NOT Spam or flood the threads with irrelevant one liners, obvious questions, gratuitous remarks, stupid thank you's etc; you really want to thank someone for a great post or a great opinion etc, use the rating function to do so.

Also, this "New post" listing is a double-edged sword as it makes it VERY EASY for anyone of us to spot the flooders and spammers - as their handle appears one right after the other.  So again, please do REALLY contribute instead of posting just for the sake of getting posting credits - OK??!!

Bro, If you're staying in HK for a few days, an Octopus card is the way to go. You pay a HK$50 card deposit + a minimum of HK$100 stored value and you can use the card on the MTR (subway), the ferry, McDonalds, 7/11 and more. At the end of your stay you either keep your card for your next visit (the stored value will remain indefinitely) or take the card back to a designated ticketing counter inside the MTR where they will refund any excess credit and also return the card deposit... it is a fantastic system (Australian Technology of course).

Joe has suggested you buy an Octopus card to travel into Kowloon and back. Octopus cards provide credit for a single leg only, not a return trip. That will cost you HK$90 each way. You will also have to mess around returning your Octopus card and getting your deposit back unless you plan to keep it. Sounds like you may be tight in terms of time?

As another option, don't buy an Octopus card... I suggest you consider buying a same day return Airport Express ticket. This will cost you HK$160 total and no deposit etc to mess around with during your short stay. You can buy these tickets 2 ways, online (cost even cheaper $155 although I have never done it so don't know how it works) and at a ticket counter at the airport. As you exit customs and walk into the "Land side" of HK Airport you will see a ticket counter (either A1 or B1 depending on which end of the airport you exit customs. You can buy these return tickets at either of these counters. While you wait in line to buy the ticket, if someone else is making the same trip and you can buy 2 or more at a time you will get a further discount ($140 return from memory).

I'm not sure what connecting flight you have and whether or not you will need to collect your bags when you arrive HK? If you dont have to collect your bags, no drama. If you do then obviously you dont want to carry them around with you. I'm not sure if there is a way you can do this air side at HK Airport because I have never had to do it myself, however if you are forced to take your bags with you, take them on the train with you to Kowloon Station. The airlines have check in counters at Kowloon Station so you just check them back in. They will give you your boarding pass etc and you're all set.

They give you a discount at the ticket counter at the Airport if you buy a same day return Airport Express ticket. Perhaps you misread the price list? An Octopus card is NOT a round trip ticket. 2 different things. Bro should not get an Octopus card, not good for his situation.

Actually - a same day return ticket Airport-Kowloon is only HK$ 90.

A round trip ticket valid for 30 days is that HK$160 ticket Tony writes about.

Ps - yup - deleted my previous inaccurate/wrong post. What he should buy is the $90 same day return ticket and not the $160 you wrote. They USED to have this ticket concession automatically when using an octopus card for same day round trips - but I guess they've discontinued this concession for the airport and it's now only available for return trip to Asia World expo.

BTW, can you buy an Octopus card at the Airport? Can you get a deposit refund at the Airport? I have no idea.

In terms of having the ticket concession automatically on your Octopus card, are you sure? How does the card know when you plan to go back? LOL. Maybe so, I'm not sure but it would have to have been quite some time ago. I tried it 3 - 4 years ago assuming price would be same and it wasn't... $90 each way. I asked the Hotel Concierge on a subsequent visit and he indicated it was common knowledge that it costs more to use your Octopus on the AE. It would be very helpful if they sorted that out though.

Another interesting nugget of information, Bros who catch a Taxi from their downtown Hotel to the Kowloon Station would be familiar with the taxi driver trying to convince you to let him drive you all the way to the airport. Offers of $300, then $200. One time I had a taxi driver agree to $100 providing I gave him my return ticket. Who knows???

Yeah - its even good for me to find out as I had just assumed all along that just by using the octopus card that this concessionary same-day fare would still apply.  

As far as I KNEW (Note past tense), this concession had been a given for years  - but the MTRC had discontinued this discount very quietly I guess;  at least I didn't realize this at all until researching this matter just now.

I really wonder how many people are - just like me - NOT aware of this change and continue to assume...AND GET CHARGED - the single journey fares twice when making a same-day trip to/from the airport.

forgetting the same day price for a minute, why would an Octopus be more expensive period??? Isn't the AEL part pf the MTR?

I guess the Asia World Expo captures the trade fair market but even as recently as 2 years ago it was $90 each way to AWE. I remember the Kenfair people made a big deal about giving visitors to their fair free train tickets to cover the cost.

Interesting price table you added above, Maybe the Trade Fair organisers subsidise the cost?

Come to think of it, these plonkers even offer a supposedly "concessionary/complimentary fare" on trips on the regular MTR which you continue on the AEL - thus funneling other unaware day-trip commuters to just use the Octopus card. Plonkers!

We locals also have a list of "discount taxi operators" = taxi drivers who will give 20-25% discount off the flag fall if the journey is over $ 70 or $80. (Not sure, I've never bothered if its below these levels)

These same Discount taxis will also negotiate a fixed price - including all tunnel tolls etc to the airport. Usually runs HK$230-250 from Hong Kong, even from the South side.  You can also arrange to have him pick you up at the airport (a long walk to where he waits for you though) on your return to Hong Kong.

These are taxi drivers with the up to 6 portable phones all going on at the same time....whilst he's driving!  Next time you see these taxis - get him to give you his contact telephone number/name card

i love this train: reminds me of Japan. when they opened the line in '98, the fare was supposed to be $100 each way. that was overpriced, and a lot of ppl said so. MTRC dropped it to $70...then quietly raised it to $100 awhile later. their "bonus": if u use the MTR to get to the Air-Ex station (which requires a lengthy walk with yr baggage), the subway-ride is free. what largesse.

if u use it a lot u can buy coupons from travel agents, last time i did so it was $145 RT. u get a coupon and exchange it at the desk for a 2-ride pass u slide thru the slot on the ticket-gate. don't use yr Octopus. if u want to catch a view of HK, take one of the express buses (HK$40). if yr traveling light and not-on-biz, this is a fun way to get back: get a topside seat on the double-decker bus.

my biztravel has slowed to a trickle, so i'm not up on the latest prices. but if spending even a few days in HK, the Octopus is invaluable. mine's hardwired to my credit-card acct which is hardwired to my bank acct, so all my expenditures at supermarts/eateries/pharmacies and wherever the Octopus is used, goes towards points. i never see a credit-card bill or pay a penny of interest. needless to say, u MUST have enough cash in your account to cover your monthly positions!

they're trying to drive traffic to AWE...i worked at a trade show there years back, and it was awful. the food was so bad ppl were going to the AIRPORT so they cd eat McDonalds food. hopefully it's better now. the trade show was huge and ppl were sitting on the floor of AEL trains on the way back to town.

the other prob with AWE, according to friends who've been to concerts there, is that as a concert venue it's lamentable. ppl arrive at diff times, but of course, when the show is over, everyone leaves at the SAME time.i've been told of hour-long queues just to exit. and of course the trains are packed solid.

the Airport Core Programme of the 90s was a great success (look at Bangkok's shoddy airport, already over capacity!), and the scalability designed in--such as the ferry terminals--has worked. first-time visitors are amazed by the AEL, and it's great to jump on after a long flight, hop a taxi at TST or Central stations and be home shortly. but the MTRC should provide concessionary fares to ALL Octopus-holders--it's absurd for us, their best customers, to be forced to buy coupons from travel agents to knock a few bucks off. just my two cents.

And my Goodness - they really have a whole bunch of good looking gals there these days.  IMHO, a lot better as a whole compared to what I've been seeing at OuYa, Mayflower, Fuhao etc.
