Am of course NOT a lawyer and thus cannot give a definitive opinion - but I've studied up on the topic as it IS a topic of self-interest to me!

Prostitution per se is NOT illegal under British common laws, (which Hong Kong is still under) and a woman can chose whatever she choses to do with her own body.  The illegal part is "soliciting for the purpose of an immoral act" and "living off the proceeds of prostitution" which covers pimping. OTH though, there have also been attempts by the authorities to use this provision in the law books for it to cover a variety of other situations - even renting out rooms to prostitutes to work out of; but the authorities must be able to prove a DIRECT correlation between the actual earnings of the prostitute and the income so derived. So "an each time levy" as an example is one such correlation versus just generally renting out the premises.

As for the Gals themselves that does this, as long as they do NOT operate in tandem with other girls - where then they would be deemed to be operating a house of prostitution - then it is generally OK.  And thus the term one room one phoenix (141) for the walk-up gals - who are usually HK Identity card holder/resident of Hong Kong - and thus fully entitled to do any business she wants to do.

And even the hotel gals, if the room gets raided, even with a punter in it and even when they can prove that she is a prostitute, then the law SHOULD NOT be broken as she is just a prostitute. They will though usually get these girls on other violations like overstaying their time permitted in Hong Kong - an immigration law violation, and/or other laws that they could muster up.  The client though is for the most part "safe" as they've not actually broken any laws.

Like I said, am not a lawyer and would appreciate any one else who does have the legal expertise if they would chime in.

The two guys running 141, Chen Shiyan (20) and Cheung Mingwen (31), were charged back in in 2005 for conspiracy to rely on living on the earnings of prostitution. Both pleaded not guilty, and looks like the charge did not amount to anything other than maybe fines. The guys were then smart enough to move their server from Hong Kong to America.

Lol, anybody else see the irony of moving your server from a country where prostitution is in a grey area to place where it is illegal throughout? (except in certain places in Nevada) Gotta love the inconsistency of laws across borders.

As for moving the forum's servers to USA, many USA-based AE-related companies have their servers outside the USA. For example, TER claims their servers are in the NL. It didn't use to be that way, but since much of their help is outsourced now, it may well have happened. But places like NL, SE, Isle of Man, etc...with strong Internet privacy laws, many porn sites, hooker board sites, park their servers there.

as the platform can only be reached by boat or helicopter, it makes it a legally interesting place to store data, right? according to the BBC: "In January 2007, The Pirate Bay attempted to buy Sealand after harsher copyright measures in Sweden forced them to look for a base of operations elsewhere. The deal fell through."

Sealand produced passports, stamps and coins, and at one point even had a government-in-exile! seriously, read the Wiki entry. u can't make this stuff up.

Talking about ID cards and being carded - I'd like to add that HK Police are - to me anyways - exemplary in the way they handle these ID card checks.  And in most other matters too.

One night many years ago, when I regularly got off work at 2 or 3 in the morning, I was running out of an alley (which is how you need to get out of my building after-hours) to make it to the old Hilton Hotel car park, before my parking goes off to another hour of charges.

Well, I practically ran into a policeman and he told me to stop and to let him see my ID card. Not even thinking of anything, I just told him - "I'm catching my parking before I have to pay for another hour, come-on, run with me and I'll show you!"

Well, here was this young policeman in his police boots jogging alongside me - all the way from Pedder street all the way to close to Ice House Street!  And I mean, this young guy was breathlessly fumbling with getting his torch light, trying to focus his eyes to read my card whilst writing some details in his little notebook - and he even then thanked me and wished me luck making the hour, afterwards!!

Can you imagine what would happen if I did the same thing in New York, or London or Bangkok or for that matter - any other parts of the world?

Yes, I AM so glad I live in Hong Kong and YES, I do think that the Hong Kong Police is indeed Asia's (even the world's) FINEST!

No, I usually get together with friends when out punting.  I just find it more enjoyable when a bunch of us get together and sort of "hunt in packs." - of course especially when we all go to KTV's.

But operating a house of prostitution IS illegal and thus the reason why a lot of gals, especially the Walk up Gals will NOT do 3P's. You see, the term 141 or one room one phoenix arises from the legal requirement for a girl to work solely in her own INDIVIDUAL premises if she is going to prostitute herself. And if the police catches more than 1 girl in an individual premise with a customer, then the police will charge them with operating a house of prostitution, profiting from the proceeds of prostitution (Pimping - which is illegal) etc etc.

The same applies for HG's too - and thus, apart from a HG being possibly being charged for violating the term of her permissible stay in Hong Kong (she is NOT allowed to take up ANY employment whilst in Hong Kong - including working as a prostitute), she would also be charged the same as the WG above. BUT, since she (and the pimp) knows that she already is committing an illegal act (working in HKG whilst not being permitted to do so), she is probably going to be a bit more relaxed/amenable about doing a 3P - "Heck - am already doing something illegal - Might as well do another thing which is illegal - am in deep doo-doo if caught anyways!"

Now, as far you the client is concerned - I'm quite sure (not 100%) that you are yourself NOT going to be get into any trouble. But I'm also wondering if the Police could charge you with "soliciting for purpose of an immoral act" - as they COULD make a case that you had been the one who instigated the 3p arrangement with one or both of the girls.

I'd be very interested to get input/correction from anybody here who does have legal training and qualifications on what I stated above.

yeah i got greedy with posting pix, staying up late fightin' the CMS...doggone thing kept DELETING the photos it was already displaying, dunno what was going on. i got the main story on there but...i was telling a STORY, y'know, stories have arcs. they find their own curve sometimes.

in his book ON WRITING, ex-English teacher Stephen King describes a story as a pre-existing fossil. i LOVE this analogy--he says that yr job as a writer is to excavate the story. u gotta be very careful to use the right tools (he's specific about these tools, as they are language, and that's what he works with) on the right parts of the fossil. this is high-level stuff: he's telling u that yr story is ALREADY written, and now u have to get to WORK to get to it.

so with tonight's Betty/Lola piece, i had some cowboy come in with a pickaxe and break a few ribs off my fossil. if I'M the one wielding the pickaxe, OK, that's one thing. but as i spend all day fighting against technology, it's damn annoying to have it shove its ravenous snout into my memories and snap off the story's arc.

There were pics in the paper and  some segments on the news. From what I saw if I had been riding the light rail that day It sure would have been boner city. I'll see if I can track down some pics. The deal was that you had to ride and not act any different than the other riders or talk about what was going on at all.

We have a trolly in Seattle called the SLUT. South Lake Union Transit.  When traffic stops and it goes by we watch and mutter "SSSSLUT"

I suspect that most people - including me - do usually have a train of thought prior to writing anything down - but the difficulty is how to get it down in black and white.  I mean, which particular word I should use to PRECISELY describe what I am thinking, how to phrase it properly, which part/thought to be over-emphasized/de-emphasized, ensuring correct grammar and speling??!! And word/sentence runs.... MAN, I'm always doing that!

And usage of words, how one wrong word can change everything; how one word can give such a different nuance even in everyday life!

As an example, I was with an old lady the other day and I was getting ready to send her back home. She turned around and told me - don't worry, I can HIRE a taxi to go home - and WHAM!!  It hit me! She used the word HIRE instead of how most people would just say that they'll TAKE a taxi - thereby expressing to me that taking a taxi for her is quite a big deal, and not something she would usually do.

I'm ever so glad that we nowadays have word processing facilities to assist us when we write; In the bad old days, there was basically not much one could do to correct anything wrong once written down.

So JtB, remember to compose your pieces in word or wordpad format first - don't take the chance (like what I'm doing mself right now! Dumb! ) DON"T write it directly onto the thread!

Edit Ps - Crap that budget speech - that guy  just raised Car First Registration taxes by 15% - just when I need to trade in my wrecked car!  And the NERVE - he's raised the tax on cigarettes by 50 cts a stick!  That's 10 bucks a pack!

I'm exploring some job openings in HK. Is it difficult to pick up cantonese? I assume you picked it up after working some years in HK?

A lot depends on your natural ability in picking up second languages.  
Also, do you speak/read/write any Chinese dialects at all?  If so, yes, it should be a lot easier - but if you don't speak ANY chinese at all - well, I'd opine that it would be quite hard.

For one thing Cantonese is a very TONAL language - 6 tones versus just 4 for Putonghua/Mandarin- and what may sound to be the same exact word to a non-speaker, can actually have 6 - or even more, much more - meanings!

And the younger you are, I'd opine, the easier is it for one to pick up a second language.

Can you tell us more about yourself?
