All activities in life have risk. To be responsible, one needs to assess the risks, minimize them where convenient, and decide whether what remains is acceptable.
Activities with risk that we would likely all consider acceptable: driving, eating sugary food, kissing a relative, eating sushi (ok, not everyone eats sushi).
Activities with risk that most of us would consider unacceptable: drunk driving, bb-anal, sharing needles with anyone.
Somewhere in the middle are things like bbbj and bbfs. People do these every day and get away with it. The occasional person catches a disease and needs to be treated. The very occasional person catches an untreatable disease. Also very occasionally, someone catches something and passes it on to a loved one. Each of us must decide whether to accept or reject these risks. There's no right or wrong answer, but there will be a "collective wisdom" as to what is or isn't prudent.
I have noticed that on this board, there are many more people who "would never do bbbj" than on the myredbook.com site (for San Francisco). On that site, bbbj is normal and accepted. Here, somewhat less so (though many clearly do it).
On usasexguide.info, in at least some sections, bbfs is quite normal and accepted, although there are still many who say it is unsafe (me among them). But in other cities on the same forum, bbfs is rarely discussed, and considered unsafe by most people.
So, there is no "one size fits all" answer. Each must do his own research and come to a conclusion as to what risks he is willing to accept, and what risks he isn't. And trying to base this on the "collective wisdom" is a fool's game, imho.
