Wow, what a change in direction. I am in the medical profession myself, and can't imagine making such a dramatic sea change at this stage in my life.
An acquaintance of mine suddenly quit his job as an ER physician in order to train as a classical musician; he had enough money saved up to support himself (simply and frugally) for the rest of his life. Stories of physicians dropping out of the profession are fairly common. Another acquaintance quit his orthopedics practice to become an insurance company executive. Shorter hours, easier work, same money. I'm sure you've heard similar stories from colleagues.
But, at least in the US, usually when someone says something vague like "in the medical profession," it's a nurse or therapist or tech or assistant, not an MD.
