For one who starts learning cantonese/mandarin from scratch, mandarin will be easier because each word can be pronounced and be built up by english characters (pinyin).

for example, the english word 'me' can be easily prounounced in mandarin as 'wo' (我), while in cantonese you need to pronounce it from the back of your throat 'nnngo'.

That's an interesting observation. It confirms the impression I've had watching the remarkable changes in the Chinese-speaking world over the past 20 years - that there has been a decisive shift of leadership, cultural as well as economic, away from HK to the Mandarin speakers. HK doesn't have the self-confidence and arrogance that characterized the place as recently as the late 80's, while China is just exploding, and even Taiwan, in spite of the rivalry with the Mainland, seems to be brimming with optimism.

yeah, it's hard to explain it completely. from a poli. sci PoV, this arguably started once the handover date was set for 1997 and Patten became a so-called lame duck governor for the British. then there's also the HK admin's need to maintain some level of favour w/ beijing, but i would argue that too much bending over has occured b/c HK has certainly lost its sense of backbone/pride in many ways. i don't know if this has somehow also trickled into the cultural side or if the locals just have may too much of a monopoly that needs to be broken up. either way, HK will need to shape up to remain competitive in any aspect. perhaps this is also why bro JeSun was taking shit from the SO for not being able to pick up mando - just a reflection of the shift as you put it.

Yeah thats true now, mandarin seems to be the basic requirements in HK, especially in business/working environment.

I cant read or write chinese but I can speak Cantonese and Putonghua. My reading/writing is getting better now because simplified chinese is so much easier to remember than traditional chinese. The WG always ask me why I can speak good putonghua and I tell them because I work in Shanghai. I only been in SH for a year and an half. When you are stuck in an environment that only speak putonghua, you will learn very quickly. I watch a lot of TV to learn to understand what they are saying first and reading the subtitles at the same time. The you just have to be brave and go out and practice. After you get the flow of things you just have to learn new vocabulary to add into your conversations.

I never really found simplified Chinese that much easier. Yes, it is faster to write, but who writes with a pen nowadays anyway?

What i have found is that it is easier to downgrade from traditional to simplified Chinese than vice versa. In other words, if you want to be able to write both easily, learn traditional first. It looks nicer too!
