Felt like making a joke about how I've not been feeling well but still mongered with the bros anyway...
but thought better of it.

Yeah, I was in Mexico six weeks ago, just before the first cases appeared, but I've been fine and haven't had any flu-like symptoms at all, so looks like I was lucky... It's a terrible thing to be happening though, and I can only hope Conny and Sylvia are well.

The only serious cases with deaths are in Mexico.
All the cases in nyc are mild with no deaths.

CL, I believe you are travelling again soon?

I know it WON'T stop swine flu but I'm going to get a flu shot before I travel to the USA mid May ...Texas of all places  (wtf!).  My concern is if I catch a "normal" flu they may treat me as if I have the swine flu, and I end up in some quarantine center with people who actually have the swine strain. Or  the scanners pick me up in HK and similar scenario.

When the SARS wave was peaking, a girl I know caught the flu while travelling in France and she ended up in Paris hospital "quarantined" with actual SARS patients ......... she ended up okay but a very scary situation, her family were totally freaked out.

It's not good, true.

But worrying about it won't help.

All we can do is hope it doesn't become a pandemic.

This is apparently not as serious/dangerous as bird flu so.....

I personally plan to laugh and joke just to keep my spirits up and not worry about things beyond my control.

A mate sent me a good text telling me to get checked. He knows I haven't been to Mexico but he says he's worried about some of the pigs I've slept with

SF is nowhere near as deadly as SARS and as it spreads its intensity drops ...
not good to catch it but recovery rate is high.

I think the main problem will be catching it while in another country and not being able to go home for sometime ...

That's correct, Froddo, getting a normal flu shot won't hurt but it won't help with the SF either since the powers that be haven't gotten around developing a vaccine for this thing yet. However, Tamiflu (an antiviral prescription medication in pill form) has been the most effective against the flu virus.. well, so far (cause you never know when (or if) the virus will mutate and then we play catch-up). Relenza is another drug that appears to have worked in the US. But yeah, both are after-the-fact, reactionary drugs..

what I find interesting is that the SF is a strain never seen before by virus hunters. It is a mix of genetic material from humans, birds and pigs!!! Only time will tell how this strain happen to come about.

The other disturbing thing going on in the US is this whole issue has become political and there are some political pundits out there who are using this crisis to promote racism.. sickening..

Much hype over nothing...

I'm sorry, but I don't understand all the angst over this...  Sure, I feel badly for the 147 people who have died in Mexico from swine flu in the past two weeks.  And I sure as hell don't want to get it.  But is that really any cause for panic?  There were in excess of 17,000 (reported) auto fatalities last year in Mexico -- or about 50/day.  That means anyone in Mexico in the last two weeks was five times as likely to die in a traffic accident as to die from swine flu.  Do we have threads on this board warning people not to get in cars or cross the street when in Mexico?  Is it somehow worse to die from swine flu rather than get wiped out by a drunk Mexican in a pickup truck?  I think not...

Relax, everyone...  147 deaths is but a small blip on top of the myriad other possible ways to die that we face every day and can somehow manage to deal with without getting hysterical...

Have fun, CGP

Agree if the number of deaths gets to 5 figures or 6 figures then its time to express some concern.

True but car deaths dont spread from one person to another. 1 zombie = 2 zombies = 4 zombies. Viruses can spread at an exponential rate. You can easily hit the size of mexico in a few days. By the time it hits a "significant" figure it will be too late to contain it.

I wasn't advocating that we ignore the problem.  By all means, we should take reasonable precautions.  Similarly, folks in cars should wear seat belts, and motorcyclists should wear helmets (that is, if that are concerned about dying).  But then let's go about our business and not worry about things we can't control...

Reply #27 rxr12's post, and others........

Maybe I wasn't clear, although Twice seemed to understand.

I am not worried about the swine flu, but I am worried about over zealous authorities who may go into panic mode with every traveller they encounter with some run of the mill flu symptoms.

If I was staying in my own country I wouldn't do anything extraordinary, no flu shots, no special stuff . If I got a cold, temperature, etc., I would just stay home in my private little quarantine and probably bounce right back in a day or two. The odds of getting swine flu, are minuscule.

Issue is if you are travelling and the pandemic scare is on then what do you do when the authorities stop you boarding a plane? Or escort you off a plane in a foreign country? Or stop you returning to your hotel? The only place they can take you is some quarantine ward. California has just declared a state of emergency so they have these powers and yet not one person has died or got more than mildly sick in that state. Australia has just enacted similar powers and likewise no one has yet presented as a serious "death" case.

I don't normally do flu shots but will this time as I want to do everything I can to avoid having some minor flu bug being misjudged by some authority as a potential "risk" when I am overseas.

One question.

Does those thin mask which used by most of the ppl during SARS works for swine flu???

If the virus/bact, travels thru air, if the carrier breath among the crowd, then a slice of thin mask can help prevent the spread.

I don;t know man...I don;t believe in this wearing mask as protection. I think it all depends on ones immune system.
Few days ago, bunch of us were taking bout this and we come into agreement that punters like us have lower risk of getting the disease bcos we fuck too mcuh and those WGs are more contagious than any of this Swine Flu .... ...touchwood....
Hence our body system is build over the yrs from visiting WGs and are able to sustain the flu. Just a theory.............

OK, I see your point here.  Youre worried about other people's irrational reactions...  I certainly agree that they are a problem...  possibly a big problem (the equivalent of trying to keep me from boarding my airplane last week in the interest of national security because I was unwilling to give up my 125 gm tube of toothpaste).

But let me ask you this...  Will claiming to have a flu shot keep you safe from tyrranical government zealots?

I now get what Froddo was saying. Caligynephiliac, he is not saying that he will get the season flu to claim anything to the govt zealots. But rather he is hoping that by getting a flu shot he will not be getting the seasonal flu and thus not running into the above described situation of getting mistakenly pulled over.

They've shut down Mexico!!!

This map is good: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&ll=23.241346

Mexico plans shutdown as world flu alert raised! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090430/ap_on_he_me/med_swine_flu)

Scary shit...

This "flu" is misnamed by the way. It should be the Mexican Flu, if we stick to the established naming conventions.
