Whatever we do, we first calculate the odds of some harm coming to us, and then weigh up the benefits against the risks. At some point, the risk of serious harm becomes sufficiently low that obsessing over it becomes a pointless waste of time. We do this with everything, it's just that when it comes to STDs, people stop thinking rationally.

When talking about oral sex, the only relevant question is whether the pleasure is worth the risk of catching some easily curable little nasty. If you're willing to risk your life everytime you get into a car, why not risk a bump on little dicky in return for years of sexual pleasure.

I did this risk assessment with DFK and DATY, and came to the conclusion that the probability of catching anything serious was not great enough to outweigh the (by now, 30+ years of problem-free) pleasure that I get from kissing and licking. There doesn't even need to be an exchange of fluids for the transmission of some diseases.  For example, herpes of teh groin and mouth are typically different viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) but they are perfectly easily cross infected.  Of course with Herpes there has to be an outbreak before you can infect someone else of be infected.  This is usually visible with a coldsore or scab, but there is a short period of time before these appear that infection is possible, be it mouth to mouth, groin to mouth or groin to groin.  Of course there is a lot worse out there than herpes and even these can be transmitted through unprotected oral without any visible signs.  Normally oral can be assumed to be quite safe as the survival of a pathogen outside it's normal host is usually limited, but with WG who service a number of cocks within such short periods if they are doing BBBJ it is almost certain that they have a bit of something contagious wriggling around in their mouths.  One thing you can be relatively sure of (unless you have an open wound on your cock) is that you wont get HIV from unprotected oral.
